Okay. So me and my friend (my friend mostly :p) put my sho back together with a brand new clutch...clutchmasters stage 1, fidanza 8lb. flywheel, motor mounts, all kinds of stuff. To make a long story short, the car's all back together, and tonight he came over to tie up some loose ends. We decided to turn it on, and it didn't fire up until we put in new gas. It was sitting for like 2 years mind you. Anyways, once inside, I shifted all the gears, bam, fit like a glove. Except for reverse. Is my transmission messed up? I even shifted to like fourth first, then tried reverse, and still no. It just wont go in. Ack! I hope I don't need a new tranny, that's gonna suck! What do you guys think it is? He says it can't be the clutch cuz if that was the case, none of the gears would go in. He knows more than me so I ain't arguing, but I'm just wondering if anyone's ever had this same problem? Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, if it's just the reverse... is this just a gear that can be swapped or something? Not that I can do it, just wondering. Thanks all, I know you guys won't dissapoint

If the car is just sitting then sometimes it's a PITA to get in reverse. Put the car in ANY forward gear and move the car a little bit. The trans should now go into reverse. This is b/c reverse doesn't have a synchro.

did you try rolling the show a bit while you try to hit reverse????
My show is sometimes a pain to get in reverse so i let it rool a bit and then it pops right in.
Let me know if that does it

The wheels aren't on, but we put it in gear already, and let the transmission roll a bit in first, afterwards, we tried to put it in reverse and it still didn't go in. I don't think that once I put on the tires and move it forward a bit, or rock it a bit, that it will make much difference since it'll basically do what I'm doing right now with the wheels off. Anyone if just reverse can mess up on the tranny and not the rest of the gears? I'm scared, I don't want to have to swap a new or rebuilt tranny on my car. We just got everything back together! dooh

The trannies have a spring load on the internal parts of the shifter. Of course you are pushing it a bit to the right before trying to move it down into reverse,,,right?? Getting back to the internal parts, there is a gate inside the tranny that guides the shifter. There is a tab on the end of that gate that blocks reverse, until you push the the shifter to the right. If that gate is screwed up it could prevent shifting into reverse. That has nothing to do with the gears. You might want to remove the shifter (rod or cables) from the tranny, and see if you can rotate the shaft to the reverse position. Thats the cheap and easy stuff to check.

Today we finish up installing the rear end on my car...the whole koni and eibach setup. So after we do that, we'll take a look at the shifter. I sooo hope that's the problem. Thanks for the idea, I'll let you know if it worked

Just talked to my mechanic. thats what I call him, my mechanic since he's doing most of the work on my car. Hmm...bad news, he already checked the shaft and that ain't it. Oh well, I'm thinking it's the tranny. I'll just stay out of places that I have to reverse out of :p

have you tried putting it in reverse while the car is off? That may be something to try before starting it.

Yep, tried that first. Thanks for the suggestion though. The whole car is put together now. all i'm missing now is some lugnutz. I'll just have to learn how to drive differently 'til i save enough for a new tranny i guess
