Hello all, occasionally lately, about 3 times in all, the car will stumble for a fraction of a second, almost like its skipping, this is while on the gas, not WOT, or anything, just driving along. At first I thought maybe it was a fuel filter or a pump, but then tonight i noticed the tach drop when it did it. Its nothing serious like the car shuts off, it just stumbles once, a quick blip and then before you even realize it did it, its done.. Is that signs of a Crank position sensor on its way? I havent had a chance to do a 60K yet, and the car has 86K miles, so it may have never had one. Any help that anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

That sounds more like a spark misfire due to either old plugs, old plug wires or fluids in the plug wells. If the spark plugs are 86,000 miles old, then they are suspects in the condition. It could be a crankshaft position sensor (CPS) or even a cylinder identification (CID) sensor and you should check the EEC memory codes for these faults. Check the links in my signature to learn how to retrieve the codes with only a short jumper wire and the ignition key. This is a great tool to help you care for your engine.

Kevin, email me if you want to swing by my house to check your codes. I've got a code reader to read your codes. I just had my surgury so I can't drive, but I will be home all day for a while. Let me know. Could be a CMP sensor (camshaft position sensor). When they fail they like to make the car buck intermittantly. Usually not just a single drop of power, but it may get worse. Keep your eyes on the problem. Another thing to watch is to see if the car ever has the tach drop to zero while it's still running. That's another CMP failure problem along with hard starting.

Eric, thatd be great! How bad of a job is that CMP to do? I had a guy do one on my 94ATX I used to have, but that car crapped out intermittently for 5 months, (found the forum long after it was fixed, DOH!). Tomorrow sometime work for you? Thanks in advance!

Works for me. I'm just not going to be around from like 10am-11am. Just let me know ahead of time. The CMP sensor is very easy to change. Maybe 30 mins-1 hr depending on what gets in your way. With small hands you might even be able to change it in 15-20 mins.
