ok heres my delma..after replacing my engine due to a bad knock, and i though i had everything with my tranny and engine fixed..well my tranny is still bad...i thought it was the VSS i had replaced it, and it still drops into neutral, revs and clunks into gear (at stop and go's and after deceleration)..now is there anything else this could be, before i have to spend 1500 to get it rebuilt..and mind u, this is the cheapest place i could find, and thats calling 10 tranny shops, and the ford dealership being the cheapest..im just making sure i havent overlooked anything yet..thanx for the help

How much are they charging you for the rebuild? It might be worth investing in an LSD since your trans will be out anyway.

The LSD is Limited Slip Differential made by Quaife. It will cost you almost as much as the rebuild itself, but it is worth it. The LSD is a closed diff. instead of the open that stock SHO's come with. It will distibute the power to both wheels instead of causing only one to spin and your diff. pin to go through your bellhousing. They come with a lifetime warrenty. thumb

Actually, the Quaife is NOT an LSD. It is an ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing), it has no clutches and does not split the power 50/50 at all times.

Um, I think his car is a automatic? The only thing for a auto is to get a shift kit put in. Look up transgo shift kits. I think they run about $50 or so. This would be the ideal time to put one in as you have to tear apart about 75% to do this mod anyways. This will improve the fluid flow which in turn helps your trans last longer while adding the stiffer shift actuator springs with the kit will give you tighter, more firm shifts. You can get a better diff. from ipt for the auto trannys if you want, but it's not needed as much as the auto trannys differential does not have pins that will blow as far as I know. I think it's only offered to improve traction really, but I guess I could be wrong. I would just ask shawn from ipt if you need to know the details. Good Luck!

Oh, sorry I must have miss read your post. You are asking what might be the effect of your eratic shifting? I belive since you have a 93 automatic, it could be the plastic internal parts for one. The 94-95 uses steel parts, which are stronger and last longer. Second the 93 computers aren't programed the best for shifting behaviors. Getting a chip or lpm can usually solve this, or swaping you computer for a 94-95 version is another way, if not both. One other thing I would try for the **** of it is change the fluid and see if it helps any. Having low fluid could be a cause of bad shifting. Do a search here on the forum on auto tranny problems and you will probaly find some more info. You can also try www.shotimes.com for more info. Last, if interested pm me and I may have a cheaper rought on a rebuild. see ya

Take if from one who has a solid gold transmission in his SHO. (At least, it seems that I have enough money in it so it should be solid gold!) do not cut corners when you have the transmission rebuilt. When my transmission failed due stripped out splines in the pump, I really wanted to have it rebuilt correctly.

I priced a Doug Lewis trans. With the core charges and having to have it shipped to the Pacific Northwest, and returning the core, I felt it was too expensive. Should have bit the bullet. With what happened later, I would have spent less money. I insisted on a shift kit, but the Ford store was real uncomfortable installing it. I got the car back, trans worked, but not real well. Runway RPM, not downshifting properly, etc. They told me that it was just the nature of the beast, it was a mazada transmission, they all did it and I had to live with it. I bought a TedB LPM, had Ted set the shift points for maximum firmness shifting. This helped, but trans still shifted like doggy do-do. I was very unhappy.

About one year after the Ford store “fixed” the trans, it started shifting extremely harsh between low and second gear at light throttle. It was just out of their warranty, and anyway, since I had insisted on the shift kit, they weren’t going do anything about it. I am a Network Administrator in a Law Firm, legal action was considered.
We traced the problem down to a broken accumulator spring. Had another shop fix it. Realized that only a small part of the original shift kit was installed the first time. Bought another shift kit. This shop really wasn't too hot to install this shift kit either. I insisted. Got the car back, trans still shifted poorly. This time, it started intermittently slipping. Took me three months before it would slip when I could get the tech in the car to show him what it was doing. Finally got the job done. This time, I told him to replace everything that could possibly cause shifting problems. He replaced all of the solenoids and a number of piston assemblies. He went over the shift kit diagrams again and made sure everything was 100%. Now, the trans works properly. Up shifts at WOT were never a problem, but now they are very crisp even at part throttle. Down shifts are great. No rpm runway and the giant clunk when downshifting is gone. I am extremely happy, now I am even starting to like my car again.

We hear really good things about the Doug Lewis trans. The fact that he starts out with a Ford rebuild, and Ford replaces a lot of things in these transmissions that the average shop doesn’t, is most likely a good part of his success. I firmly believe that if you cut corners here, you will be sorry. Take out a loan, save your sheckles, put your wife on the street, (just kidding) but DO NOT CUT CORNERS when it comes time to fix your trans.

Check the classifieds and see if Shawn sold his Ford rebuilt autotranny yet. It was posted a while ago.

have the front piston upgraded to the steel one, about 30 bucks. you might want to cryo some parts thats what I'am doing to mine. if ford does rebuild your tranny remember they will probably only use oem parts so if you dont watch it you be back at the beginning. also you might want to look into a stall convertor. :D
