Need fast help on brake upgrade

I get more responses here so far than the emergency board, so here goes:

I need to do my brakes. I have been calling parts places and they are very confused when I ask for 94-95 Knuckles. After some explaination, they tell me the front's are $60-$80 a piece and the rears are actually called "stub axles"?!? They are also telling me I have to get the SHO specific ones...should I be getting the knuckles from an SHO? I thought they were the same on all Tauri in the front and rear except the wagons...


Please help!

Also, I'm not so sure that my hubs are the things that are groaning...I think it is just my brakes. What do you guys say? Replace them anyway while I'm doing the brakes? Car currently has 92K.

TIA. Need help quick before the SHO runs off the road! And I don't want to waste my time and money with stock brakes.

They are trying to sell you halfshafts.

You can get knuckles from the junkyard, and maybe Ford. Not sure where else you would find them at. A parts store most likely does not sell them.

So the rears DO have knuckles and I must get them as well for the 96 upgrade, correct?

Jack up the front end and rock the wheels up and down. If they have play, then the bearings are bad.

When does it groan? All the time? Only while braking?

While braking and starting up from a 5 mph or less roll after breaking. And I know my lower ball joints are badd...and my tie rods...but the brakes feel like they're ready to give out and are squeaking and grinding.

Well, you should probably replace the brakes now, and then figure out if anything else is wrong before you **** yourself and someone else.

FYI - 96' Brake upgrade is for the front only. You already have better brakes in the back.

Try using the phrase "front spindles" when talking to the junk yards. While not technically 100% accurate, it is the common vernacular for that part.

As Terry mentioned, you only need the front knuckles/spindles/knee assemblies to upgrade to '96+ brakes. The base rear spindles are identical for all variety Taurus and Sable sedans from 1986 to present. The only differences are in the backing plates, calipers, and brackets (or drum brakes on some models).

Try using http://www.car-part.com to search your local junk yards for the knuckles.

Not quite 100% true. The 86-89 had regreasable bearings. In 1990, they switched to a fully sealed, non-regreasable bearing.

The dealers want $700+ for the front pair!!! rant

Anyone have a set? I am so frustrated!

I just searched Car-Part and found a number of them in CT in the $50-$75 range.

In any case, you can also drive up to Spencer, MA and Kirk will sell you a pair for $100 cash.

Ok...so I essentially have two threads of my own going, so sorry if I'm making you all crazy.

Question: Should I get 94-95 Wheel Bearing/Hub Assemblies to go with my 94-95 knuckles, or do I get the 91 SHO WB/HUB asseblies?

EDIT: And should I get the ceramic pads for the 96 SHO?

Edit 2: Nevermind, WB/HUB question answered by dealer. I can use 91 b/c it was produced after Feb. 91.

I'd also have to say that, so far, my junkyard experiences with regard to my SHO have generally been frustrating and unproductive, as well. It's almost like they've picked up on Ford's "PITA" mentality toward the SHO or something... shrug

Why can't they just see it like we do? finger
