Hey all,

Does anyone have, or know of someone or someplace in the East Lyme/ New London area that is selling generators? Some friends of mine lost power, and the local utility says they could be in the dark for more than a week.

They're a family of 5... and some fish... anything anyone could do to help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Hamal

I'm a ways away in MA but I can check my local Home Depot. They are in a bad location and weren't busy either Friday or Saturday and always seem to have everything in stock.

Kamal try Craigslist. Also, one thing some people don't know - now that alternators are 100 to 120 amps routinely, it is possible to hook up an inverter to your car and make enough power to run a refrigerator, as long as the car is running - check tyhe auto parts places.

That said I am begining my own search here. Was in Old Lyme Saturday and saw a green SHO in Westford.

I ran the bare essentials in my house with a 1400W inverter hooked to my SHO's alternator. This included the fish tank aerator and heater, a couple compact fourescent lights, a mini fridge, and some occasional computer use.

120A x 14v = 1680w. Keep in mind that your alternator will not provide 120a for long at idle, so you'd need some way to keep the engine at at least 2-3000rpm.

Other than that, though, it'd work ok. If you have spare car batteries, you can hook them up in parallel to gain more starting current. A single battery can give up to 11,200w (11Kw) for a short period of time - enough to start up a fridge. Three batteries in parallel can supply 34Kw of power for a short time. That's enough to start up the Large Hadron Collider. Running current is still limited to the alt's ability to charge the batteries (1.6Kw), though. Oh well.

Sorry, Hamal, the Home Depot near to me sold out this morning. I checked a few nearby as well as my local Lowe's and Tru Value. Nothing...

The Lowes and HD near me are out, but there's a zillion of them on craigslist, unfortunately they want all the money too.

Wish I still had my Honda. Loaned it to a friend 7 or 8 years ago to keep his furnace running since he had a newborn at home and power was predicted to be out for at least a week (ended up being close to 2 weeks). That was at the beginning of the winter and afterwards I told him to hold on to it in case he lost it again during the season since I rarely lose power. Worked out he needed it a couple more times, and then once spring came I was busy with work and hadn't talked to him in a couple of months. Ran into his brother that summer and found out he moved to L.A. and nobody knew where my generator ended up. :(

I just picked up an 8000 watt titan industrial on CL for $500 brand new. Stupid of me not to have one where I live; now with this 100 gal. reef tank, it's a necessity. 8000w should be enough to run that, the fridge, tv, a couple of lights, and a portable a/c unit I hope.
