They are dampners to prevent resonant vibrations in the fuel rails. The spacing of the rails is fixed by the bolted mounting brackets. They should be placed in the three marked locations along the fuel rails, but I have found several down in the valley (reminds me of a old western show). The most unusual spot I have found one is shown in the picture below. That is the secondary port of the number 2 cylinder. I'll bet this owner found a little more performance after I removed this misplaced dampner. I would love to know how it got there in the first place.
