I was looking at the hood of my SHO today, pondering and lamenting the broken transmission, when I thought of NACA ducts.

In the ford tradition (69-73 mach 1, GT40, et al.) I think it'd look purt' sweet to put a pair of naca ducts on the front corners of the hood. the drivers' side would ram air directly into a cone filter, fitted to the MAF where the airbox once was....and the passenger side would...umm....cool the battery? :D

Plus--the advantage of NACA ducts---
They scoop air without creating resistance. because the space in the actual duct starts out as a static mass, you've got no increase in drag.

the only question is...how big? I don't want to have to cut up any hood support structure.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm not familar with "NACA" duct. It sounds exactly what I am looking to do. How is the rain kept out?

I want to do it because I feel the engine compartment gets way to hot. Thats a freakin big motor in a small hole. Also my battery looked overheated and warped(i changed it).

NACA actually stands for something...an acronym...but i cant remember what it is. they're shaped---kind of like the end of an eyedropper. the forward end is narrow and the rearward end is wide...and they're curved concave on either side. the 69-73 mach 1 had NACA ducts on the hood. The GT40 had NACA ducts on several places...notably the brake ducting. The ferarri F40 has *huge* NACA ducts on the sides. you'll know what i'm talking about when you see them. Rain would be kept out by a small baffle i guess. They're quite efficient in that they don't increase drag...i dont know why because i'm not an engineer. you also see NACA ducts as air intakes on some fighter jets. on the fuselage on the leading edge of the wings...

Here's a pic of naca ducts on the front bumper panel of a porsche 944 turbo.

You guys should check this place out-http://carbontrix.com/index.html

They have small NACA ducts in carbon fiber, and the ones I was looking at, the rear facing hood scoops. I thought aboout one of those ducts in my driver side fender for more air, and one of the vents in the center of the hood, facing back to relieve the massive amounts of heat produced by the SHO. Maybe someone could Photochop one of these onto an SHO for us?

That would be a great idea.
The NACA looks cool.
I have been looking at the medium sized Lund scoop. I know its its a small rise, but its looks tough.
(You know the fake one that is just for looks.)

I have wanted to pick up a Sable hood to possibly make a model before I hog a hole in my SHO hood.

I realy like the Pontiac ram air design.

I don't want ram air, I want to cool the engine compartment.

I also would only like to have one on the drivers side.
