I swear, I can't even go to the tireshop to get a nail pulled without incompetence rearing it's ugly head. :madflame:

Of course, now all the studs are loose in the hub, so my question is whether it's possible to just replace the studs, or if I have to replace my hub and bearing as well?

Thanks in advance...

If the thread is ok (not hard to screw) , Re-tight and go.

If thread is bad , replace studs-nuts and go.

Never seen someone replacing the hub for that.

When I say the studs are loose, I mean that I can literally spin them around and push them out of the hub with my fingers.

Studs for sure, but you may need to change the hub as well if its been damaged. You will know when you put a new stud in.

The tire store should pay to fix it, since they F'ed up by there negligence, by not torquing the lug nuts. At least let them know they almost killed you.

Do you think that's the noise you were hearing?

The studs are easy enough to replace, and I'd replace any that are loose. If some are spinning I don't know how you'd tighten a lug on them, anyway.

1) spin the wheel to get access to the back side, pair of vise-grips.
2) Green Loctite. Won't spin after drying. Ever Again.

Don't ask how I know this works.

on a side note Hamal, Napa / Autozone have the hub / bearing kits. The studs are for std taurus, not as long as the SHO studs, so you may find you want to replace them. Obviously you'll need to press out the bearing, etc.....

If you replace the studs anyway, you'll likely find that the length you want will need the broaching ground down a little bit to allow them to press into the hub.

This is the exact same thing that happened to my car after I got it back from the shop, I raised **** and called the mechanic at home at about 11pm when I noticed it happened and that it was so bad it had broken 2 of the studs. I played the ******* and told him I would not be willing the drive the car with 3 of 5 studs ( I know it'd have been safe ) and made him come and tow it, fix it and return it. :snicker:

A.) Stop going to whatever tire shop you use and go to NTB (national tire and battery) Good guys there. I work for NTB and as a company they have ways of making sure that EVERY wheel get torqued.

B.) replace hub..If the studs spin freely in the hub, then the slots on the studs are ruined, and the slots in the hub are most likely the same way.

c.) replace wheel bearing just 'cause. God know how much of a beating that gave it.

Agreed Hamal...if the studs are spinning by hand more than likely you are going to need a new hub....hope you get it fixed by this weekend

What really sucks is that the hub and bearing have less than 5000 miles on them. :madflame:

I had this happen years ago (early to mid 90's) after getting a brake job done on my first SHO. But in my case I think the guy overtorqued the lugs and streched the studs. My first tire fell off (literally) shortly after it happened and the other (should have had it checked) fell off a few months later. On top of this they guy said it was my fault cause I drove the car too hard. And the best part is the shop that did the work later entered the Mechanics hall of fame on SHOtimes.com

Not intended as an attack on you or the shop you work at, but Im sure EVERY shop will make the same claim.

Simple reason I carry a torque wrench with me every time I have new tires fitted. And dont leave the lot until I retorque every single lug nut.

More often than not, I find the nuts way OVER torqued. One that was so damn tight I didnt want to risk damaging my 25-125 ft lb torque wrench loosening it, so I went straight inside, grabbed the on duty manager, and lead him outside. I told him to grab a breaker bar and try to loosen the lugs.

I left with a 10% off coupon for my next tire purchase (never used), and Im pretty sure he fired at least one guy that day.

Try it first. It's relatively easy to pop the old studs out and see if a new one will seat. If so, you're done.

I wont take any offense whatsoever to that...I know what you are saying. But the thing is, you cannot ring the customer out if someone else has verified that it has been torqued.

Honestly, I have seen lazieness take its toll. 2 of the guys there tend to just BS it and one will say they saw the other torque the wheels, when infact they didnt see it, but the guy who worked on the car actually did torque them down. Well one time he just gunned them down and forgot to torque them, He realized and had to go explain to the customer that he forgot to torque them, and torqued them in the parking lot. My boss ripped him a new one for that.
