My plug Well Seals are shot

My plug well seals are shot. I pulled a plug today and it is covered in oil. I wonder if this is causing my CEL light and intermitent starting problems too.

At any rate I have heard I can use RTV and not pay for the gaskets without a problem. With that in mind what other parts will I need to buy? I read one article that said valve cover gaskets, and they said they ran 80 bucks! Ouch.

I plan to get the AC delco wires too and I have some motorcraft plugs to put in.

In my opinion, don't cheap out and use RTV, cause you'll end up doing the job over again. The felpro gasket set comes with the tube seals, pay the money do it right.

yeah if you are not sure if they have EVER been done, and they need to be done, get NEW gaskets... i resealed my old ones 2 months back and they are leaking already... i know the prices suck!

Just did mine yesterday. I used the $80 Felpro set. I also replaced the original wires while I had the intake off. I used the ACDelco set. Fit great. Popped some new plugs in as well. Took me over 5 hours taking my time and carefully cleaning everything. Get the new seals. You don't want to do this again.

I just changed my plugs and wires on Saturday. Wires cost $110.00, Bosch dual-tips cost $26.00, upper plenum gasket cost $65.00, and some little nick-nacks. Total price to change some plugs and wires $218.00. Then I found the same think as you---plug wells FILLED with oil. I didn't have the time or cash to pay for new seals (you have to buy the whole valve cover gasket set $97 at Kragen). So I just replaced the plugs and wires and cleaned it all up. Burned a bunch of oil out of the engine that leaked in from taking the old plugs out, but the car runs great. Faster start-up, quicker revving and a slight increase in power.

Now I gotta do it all over again times 2. Still gonna replace the valve cover gaskets / well seals. Anyone out there got an easy how-to on this project I can read or pics? I'll buy your gaskets too.

Those plugs won't last long untill they are burned up, Motorcraft plugs work best. Also, it is best to remove all the oil before you pull the plugs, because it tears up the cylinder walls to just let it all dump in there. I would also replace those gaskets soon, because the oil going into the plug wells will destroy the new wires....
