Ford SHO 92

Well my AC was acting up for awhile, going off after about 15 mins and never comming back on. Then one day it just quit all together and only blew air. I brought it to the Ford house and they told me the switch that controls the Engine fan and the cluch had gone out and they replaced it which costed 400$ all together. Well I got it back and it worked again but still turned off after 15 mins of use.. So I brought it back to them and they replaced the cluch and pulleys for free.. welp i get it back again and still had problems with it turning off... I bring it back a third time and they gave it back saying they could never get it to mess up.. They said the compressor, control unit, freion, clutch(new) is fine. Whenever it goes off i'll pop the hood and run out and the clutch isn't going :/ any ideas???

Silicon,

Get your service invoice and post EXACTLY what they did (part names & part numbers, too). When you paraprase technical details, it's difficult to follow the exact information needed in order to assist you.

Usually that symptom is an air-gap problem on the clutch. There's a washer you can remove to reduce the gap and increase the magnetic holding power of the clutch. Check the SHO faq

Ok here was what was on the invoice...

CUSTOMER STATES A/C INOP
CHECK CAR FOUND A/C AND COOLING FAN INOP FOUND WIRES TO CCRM RELAY SHORTED OUT AND CCRM RELAY BURNT UP, REPLACED CCRM RELAY AND REPAIRED WIRING, RECHECK NO OTHER PROBLEMS FOUND

PARTS------ E9DZ-12B577-A (Control ASY R) $180.64
84397 (AC-PLUG) $23.50

Then it atleast came on but kept turning off and never comming on.. so I brought it back a second time.. They never gave me a invoice for the second time because they did it all for free... they claimed they replaced the clutch and the pulleys...

The third time I brought it back because it kept acting up by turning off and staying off and comming back on like 10 mins later but they gave it back saying they couldn't ever get it to do that...

Welp it STILL turns off and I run out and watch it and maybe 10 mins later the clutch will re-engage for maybe a min and turn back off for 10 mins ect....

My vote is on the AC clutchg COIL being bad. They get hot and quit after a few minutes. If you get it on a freeway, they usually start working again at speeds above 75 MPH, takes a few minutes at speed for the coil to cool off and start working again. Difficult to diagnose, need to check the continuity of the coil when it is hot and failing. Good Luck.

I think they pulled a fast one on you. Do you know how much the pulley and the clutch cost from the dealer? I assure you, they wouldn't have given it to you for free. Sounds alot like the gap needs adjustment. It's a simple procedure that you can do with simple hand tools.

UPDATE
Well the clutch STILL keeps turning off randomly. I have a little temp. gauge that will show 48 degress one min, then 5 mins later it's blowing hot air, I run out and the clutch has stopped. Tonight I even saw some smoke comming from under the battery.. These Ford guys are really making me mad and I'm bringing it back again tommorow for the FORTH time for the same problem.. I'll let yall know frown

Silicon, have all the same symptons you describe on my 94ATX. I have a post under "electronics etc." Went to three different shops and described symptoms. System checks out fine. Had clutch gap checked,.030. In tolerance. Two shops said bad clutch. Did the "tap test on the cluth pulley to determine this. Two shops said they would,nt change out clutch. Had to have new compressor, evaporator etc for about a thousand bucks. Went with shop that checked air gap. Had new clutch/wcoil installed. Ran cold and did'nt cut out in shop. Picked it up this morning and same old shit after half hour in traffic blowing hot air and brand new clutch not engaged. More than a little PO'd. Back to the shop next Monday. Did you ever get your problem straightened out?

Anybody got any suggestions? could the new clutch gap be improperly set? All responses appreciated. Hot in more ways than one in Alabama.

Wow, I'm thankful that after my A/C was blowing hot air a few weeks ago, that all I had to do was readjust the clutch gap. You guys keep us posted on what the outcome is. Inquiring minds want to know. :)
