It is hard to find good clean cars in Alberta unless they are properlly garaged. I figure cars from Alberta should be parts cars mostly and cars from B.C. should be the daily drivers mostly. I tend to be wrong sometimes, but rare occasions have happened.

I have seen some cars from year 2000+ in Alberta with lots of rust.

(FYI - Alberta is a province in Canada)

I was lucky with my 89, and my fiancee's 92, both are fairly rust free, mine is mainly exterior surface rust, and same with the 92, both the undercarriage and the rocker panels are clear

On the 89, how was the 'bad timing gear' determined? Does he have it torn apart? Seems like a high price to pay for something that isn't running (but I can't say much because I bought an almost not running 91 for $1K). Did he say if it's the crank gear or the cam gears?

the black 89 w/ timing gear issue

He never really said the crank or cam gears, he only said timing gear. he basically said he was rebuilding some things with the motor, and he cannot locate a timing gear. He said maybe "the net" but he doesnt think so. He is in a position now where he has put to much money into it and its too old. He is about an 1.5 hr drive from my house in the complete opposite direction of civilization. I really want to go back out there and look and take pics of the engine bay. I do remember the croosover and couple other parts were in a box.

-Thanks

So next time I go look at this car, if I can should I try to look at the crank gear and see if it looks worn/dirty down there? Or at least along the lines of a "fixable situation" If it looks really discolored (rusty/carbon colored) and the shaft looks stripped... I should probably stay away from it. I think I need to take a couple more pics and let the forum make some calls.

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

just an FYI 89 never came with factory black interior so the owner should know what he has unless he has the years mixed up and told you 89. so this 89 might not be an 89.
Dude, I just bought and installed a black 89 full leather interior in my 92. The part number on the rear seats was a 1989MY part number, in fact.

Who told you that the 89 never came with a factory black interior?

The production numbers tell us. Black just wasn't available in 89. Maybe it has an 89 part number because it's an early 90 model?

The car the seats came out of was an 89. I've got more than enough wrench time on this car to know that it's an 89, between the 89 dash, 89 suspension and brakes, 89 steering wheel, and 89 VIN Number. The car is an 89 by every account. That said...

I found a build sheet on one of the seats, and ran the VIN. The seats came out of a 1990 SHO. :)
