Sorry if this has been covered before, I couldn't find the info I needed using the search.

Anyway, my MTX tranny is leaking pretty badly through the VSS. As far as I can tell, the fluid is coming up around the speedo driven gear shaft, past the little o-ring and into the body of the VSS. From there, it's wicking its way up the cable, fortunately stopping where the two cables meet, and not proceeding into the passenger compartment. It could also be leaking around the bigger o-ring seal between the driven gear housing and the tranny housing, but that alone wouldn't explain the fluid getting up into the VSS to begin with. It must also be leaking around little o-ring at the top of the gear shaft.

Is this little o-ring supposed to seal inside the VSS tube? When I slip the VSS over the o-ring, it's pretty loose and I can't imagine it's actually sealing anything.

Leaks around the big o-ring and the VSS threads are easy enough to fix with some sealant, but how should I fix the leak from the driven gear directly up into the VSS?

TIA.

Replace the VSS.

Really? I just installed a new Ford VSS about 6 months ago.

The leak started about a month ago, after I had to replace the driven gear when the old one snapped off.

I tried replacing the two rubber O-rings (see SHOnut for part number) which did not appear to stop the internal leak up the speedo cable. I just picked up a Motorcraft VSS to try on mine, have not put it in yet - understand this area gets pressurized with fluid slung off the ring gear while moving (higher speeds = more pressure) zak

Mine was leaking around the plastic shaft and up into the VSS. The little oring that's on the end of the plastic shaft wasn't doing a very good job.

I ended up putting another oring between the plastic shaft and the aluminum bushing that holds the shaft in the transmission. The oring was small enough to go between the plastic and aluminum up near the top of the shaft. I haven't seen any leaks for 2k miles. (fingers crossed).
