Get under the car and inspect the case for diff pin failure. The MTX could just be low on fluid too.

Yea I was just under there and I saw one problem. The rod that runs along the shifter rod was loose where it bolts to the tranny. What signs should i look for of pin failure

Sometimes diff pin failure is not evident at first. I've known a few lucky souls who's diff blew and the pin did not break the case. I'm sure if they had continued to drive that eventually it would have happened.

If the bolt is gone or is worn where the rod shifter connects to the tranny you can get one from a member or you could find an equivalent at any hardware store. If it's not damaged then tighten it.

If you suspect internal damage I would highly suggest you get the tranny dropped and fixed before you drive it any more. At least at this point you have a case that is in tact. This could change very quickly if you continue to drive it.

I think his problem is TOB related. It could be that yours is also or the bang could have been one of the fingers breaking on the pressure plate also. Or it could have been the diff smacking the inside of the tranny case. It's really hard to say not being able to see it or having been there when it happened.

Yeah, it's an old thread, I know. But I never answered the question...

In my case, by all accounts it was either the main shaft bearings or the differential bearings getting toasted. The noise continued to get louder, and then it had a hard time staying in 1st gear (it would pop out with a loud bang), and then eventually the obnoxious grinding started. In the end, the gearbox locked up while backing into my friend's shop, and that was that. I'm pretty sure my failure was attributed to the case being filled with gear oil by a previous owner.
