I've been thinking about flushing my transmission and replacing the fluid with synthetic. This as we all know has been made more difficult by ford who didn't add a transmission drain plug for the MTX.

So, here's my question...

My car has 135k and presumably is filled with the same transmission fluid it was born with. I have absolutely no transmission problems and am afraid of developing some with a flush.

Would anyone advise against this idea or should I just go for it?

Thanks,

If there is a problem it is better to find it on your terms than the shos terms.
Make sure you use a quility fluid..Gears magazine had a right up on some of the cheapo fluids having a high sulfer contint that ate away the brass blocking rings from the syncros...just use good fluid, i would also install a drain plug shotimes had a pretty good blog

It's pretty common that manual transmissions and live axles don't have drain plugs. It is, however, pretty easy to add one to the MTX and that mod is described in a number of places, like here:

http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0&sid=93

If the fluid is old and you're worried about it it might not be a bad idea to change it. Lots of people use synthetic ATF in the MTX, but there are some potential issues with some of the more exotic blends (e.g., some of the Redline products) and which type of synchronizer ring you may have. A good all-around synthetic that doesn't seem to care which type of synchronizer is installed is Mobil 1 ATF, which I personally think give a lot of bang for the buck.

No, you wont hurt your MTX by flushing the fluid.

You can pop out an axle to drain it - or install a drain plug - or suck it out with a vacuum - or remove the lower of the two bolts while it's in neutral(don't touch the shifter while the bolt is out).

Either way...

If you want to really flush it well, use 3 quarts of the "el cheapo" ATX fluid of your choice, run it for a week, and change it again.

This time use Mobil-1 ATF.

During my searches on this subject I did come across the write up on shotimes for the drain plug and was planning on doing this with my fluid flush.

What I'm simply trying to avoid is having to rebuild my transmission in my daily driver, hence my reluctance to do this if problems can occur.

Mobil 1 is what I use in the engine and was planning on using their ATF fluid when I did the flush.

A week is a bit long, IMHO. I'd run the cheap stuff for a couple days atmost.

Again, IMO.

I installed the drain plug years ago using the shotimes procedure. It's easy. On a scale of 0 to 10 difficulty, I'd rate it a 3. Put some tape around the drill bit so it does not go too deep when it pops through. Tapping the threads is easy in the soft aluminum. Use a brass plug, not steel. I use Mobil1 ATF.
