Hi,
I have a 93 SHO with a MTX and I recently changed the transmission fluid when I replaced one of the axle seals. I only had access to the dexron mercon type atf. In a couple of weeks I'm going to be taking a ~5000 mile cross country road trip, and I was wondering if this would be fine, or should I change this fluid to one of the synthetics or the f-type transmission fluid. If I should change it, what is the recommended fluid?
(my car has ~117,000 miles on it, and I had the transmission replaced the transmission at 92,000 miles) Thanks for the help!

You're going to get a number of different suggestions. I personally use Redline D4 ATF. If you perform a search you'll find tons of info on the subject.

I'm not aware that the recommended fluid for the 93 would be a Type F. I believe you're manual should state Mercon/Dexron as the fluid to use. That being said, you're fine for your long distance trip.

There are other types of fluid that most of us have experimented with. I'm running Mobil 1 Syn. and don't have any problems. Redline has a good fan base as well.

From what I've seen about this before, the most popular fluids would be Redline, Mobil 1, and Synchromesh. I think I'm going to give Mobil 1 a try in my MTX when I refill it. If you decide to stick with the Mercon, you could add some Ford Friction Modifier to help make shifting more smooth. Each tranny will respond differently, and I actually used Valvoline MaxLife (Mercon spec) ATF in Joy's MTX and it shifts wonderfully. I may eventually change it out for a synthetic fluid, but it's also younger at about 90k, so it should still feel better with the regular fluid.

Synthetic ATF is what the factory had in them. I use Mobil 1. You can't go wrong with it.
Make sure that the clutch is releasing correctly.
Synthetic is so slick that sometimes the synchros aren't as efficient as they should be.
The synchro works like a brake on the hub of the gear.
The more friction it has the better it works.
Synthetic ATF is about as slippery a substance as you can possibly put in the trannie.
