3 qts, check it with your finger at the fill plug area. Fluid should be just below the bottom of the fill plug.

Oil?? MTX takes ATF just like the ATX. Do not put gear oil in the tranny. Mark is right on the 3 quarts

The challenge is not adding fluid, but in removing it since there is not a drain plug. There have been several discussions on this Forum (you may use the search function at the top right of the page) regarding the various mehtods to remove the existing fluid in the transaxle. I have been able to extract as many as 3.0 of the 3.1 quarts (6.2 pints) that the transaxle holds by the use of a Black and Decker manual vacuum pump and a stiff, curved suction tube. You should have good results with the D4 ATF.

i did it with even less than that, all i used was a small plastic tube, got it to start siphoning, and left it alone for a while, i got just about all of it, i had just a little extra spill over when i refilled it with 3.1 quarts

Did anyone else have an issue when they tried to take out that square plug? I couldn't budge it at all. I even tried an extention and still no budge. Any ideas? Thanks.

The plug isnt square... it has a square hole in it where you insert a 3/8 extention (3/8 right?? my brain can't think) into.

If you are having problems then you are either using the wrong tool, not inserting the extension far enough, or worse... stripped.

ah... edits suck:

I just noticed you said you cant budge the plug... are you sure you are turning it the right way? (not kidding)

it might take a little muscle, remember, its been in there 10 years or more, and hasnt moved. once I got it to move, it moved easily.

Hey Guys I hate to sound stupid but is the fill plug located on the forward face of the tranny case(facing toward the front of the car)? I looked all around for it and could only find a plug similar on the front face of the case. I recently changed my Driver side axle & upon removing it I noticed that the fluid that dripped out sure looked and smelled like gear oil. It wasnt the usual Ruby red Dexron Mercon III I'm used to having in other cars(I'll take pics). I suspect that is the reason for some of the sloppy 1 -2 shifts that I recieve sometimes. I purchased the car from a local AAmco tranny shop about a year ago and have never had to check out the tranny(I've only driven it 3K miles). Anyone have any clues to why the tranny shop would re-fill with gear oil? I plan to use a siphon pump to remove the oil and refill with the proper fluids soon. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks
