What did I do wrong here?

If I put it in reverse, it stays there until I put it into second gear, roll foward then it will go into first gear. After I do that, all is fine. It feels almost like the shift fork is sticking, but the shifter moves through all the gates just fine. I know it has to come back out, but until I have an answer I'm leaving it in . . . .

Thanks!

is it a rod shifter? if it is check the shifter boss bolt (the bolt that connects one of the rods to the trans. case) i had one strip threads and back out on me, all i could get was 1st gear and reverse... its a bolt about 4-5 inches long.

Hey, ITT is just across the river from the boats (casinos) docked in St. Charles. You'll be just about 5 miles from Lambert, 21 miles from the St. Louis Gateway arch, and 16-17 miles from Pick-n-Pull.

Is it the Gen I or Gen II ?

If it's the Gen II, I'm definitely agreeing with the rod shifter/transmission boss.

The gears are setup on three shafts - 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, and 5th/reverse. The fact that it's a gear that's on the opposite corners of the shift-gate also says rod shifter.

I had a similar issue last year , I couldnt put it in reverse , no grinding -nothing all other gears AOK.

Turns out it was the 5th gearset , it was jamming inside one another , and since 5th and reverse are "connected" ....

I couldnt find the why on the gears , no marks , no damage -nothing , and when I replaced the gearset , it went in there smoothly. And it fixed it.

Ok, since you're the smartest reply so far. Did I forget to put the E-clip on the 5th gear shaft?

EDIT: James posting from Dave's comp.

So why would that affect 1st, which isn't on the same shaft?

I got the synchronizers backwards. The 3rd/4th synchro is stacked on top of the 1st/2nd synchro on the output shaft. Both the 1st-4th gear set and 5th/reverse gear set sit adjacent to the differential. So the 1st/2nd synchro is located opposite the Reverse/5th synchro (only 5th is synchronized), which places 1st gear in close proximity to both Reverse and 5th. So if anything is protruding from the 5th gear synchro, it could inhibit the movement of 1st gear, when the shifting fork is trying to move it outward toward the engine-side of the transmission.

Wonder where Beth is . . . ?

My brother's '98 Mustang GT got stuck in reverse a few months ago. He ended up having to get a whole new trans. If you want I can try to find out what went wrong specifically; not sure if it's applicable though.

Well, I'd say you forgot to put something back in. It's possible that the clip could cause something like that, but in all honesty, I think it's probably a fork.

I know you've got tons of parts, but if you do end up needing something just let me know and I'll send it down.
