I believe that my tranny is finnaly begining to go. It shifts hard, has trouble finding gears and it seems like the synchros are finally going. Its real embarasing when i can't find 1st gear at a green light. Anyone know how to rebuild one of these things? Is it even possible to do using normal tools and a house garage? Do any auto parts stores even sell synchros or rebuild kits? I know i can pay a tech to do this, but that will cost way too much then its worth.

On a side note, I think its pretty bad that anyone can become an engine expert after reading a few issues of Hot Rod or something, but the tranny is still concidered a mystery to most of us, except for those who specializ in rebuilding them.

Try using the search feature of the forum about your trans issues. You might benefit from a secret mix of trans fluid (or just another brand). There are many people running many different brands of fluid, and combinations of a few different fluids.

When I first picked up my '89 first and second were a bit hard to find when the trans was cold. After warming up it was a bit easier... with a complete change of fluid, almost like new :D

If your trans is on it's way out...My first stop would be at a junkyard in search of a rebuildable trans. boink

That way you can rebuild the used trans while you continue to drive your car...

there is a handful of "special tools" but the job isnt impossible for even the most mechanically illiterate. Again, try the search first... you'll be happily surprised thumbs_u

As for parts... not sure, a few weeks ago rumors were floating around about parts being discontinued :( But Im sure they are available somewhere.

www.shonutperformance.com sells a quaife installations video, it also shows you how to rebuild an MTX. I'm not sure what tools you need but I'm sure there's a few specialized ones.
I read on the forum somewhere that a company by the name of Southern Gear makes a rebuild kit for a few hundred bucks.

But like mentioned above, try a fluid change first. I use GM synchromesh with good results.

You may also have a clutch or TOB that's on it's way out. But either way, the tranny has to come out so you can check those things then to see what's needed.
