MTX problem

Ok, I was driving down the road one day and I suddenly felt a shock. It felt like I hit something then I looked in my rear view and saw alot of white smoke comin from the car. I pulled over asap and there was a big puddle of gear oil underneath the car. I then checked under the hood for the culprit and found a chunk of aluminum and then I saw a hole on top of the tranny. How would this happen? Is it fixable? The car is a 92 mtx with around 163k miles on it. Thanx for the help.

a good welder if the cracks are on the right contours might fix it....

You most likely threw a diff pin as that's the usual cause for that sort of thing. It's typically the result of doing burnouts in a poorly lubed tranny.

The case is usually not recoverable so start looking for a new tranny. Definitely don't drive that one.

your diff pin blew through the case of the transmission. very common problem, you need a new transmission. have you done lots of burnouts in the car? doing so would have signifantly reduced its life.

The hole is rearward on top of the tranny and it is by what looks like the reverse light switch. Is that where the diff pin would blow out?

The reverse switch is on top of the tranny at the end near the driver's side fender. The VSS is at the back near the firewall closer to the motor. The VSS is driven off the diff, so a failure due to the diff pin could easily be near that.

Having the differential pin ejected out the side of the case has nothing to do with a poorly lubed tranny. It's a result of constant burnouts or one tire slipping and the other staying put. The torque on the main pinion eventually busts the pinion retaining pin and thus a ejected pin out the side of the case. Nothing to do with a poorly lubed tranny.

I'm not really on top of transmissions just yet, I've been dealing with the rest of the car. Would installing a quaife be a "preventative measure", of sorts?

very very very good mod... well worth the 1300... if i could throw that amount of cash at one time, i would do it...

I agree that excessive burnouts/hard shifting causes added stress to the pinion shafts. However, if there isn't any fluid in the tranny, you might as well throw it off your roof. No atf ='s SHO boom. Sorry about your mis fortune. Buy the Quaife, and you will be very happy! No more blown tranny's, and better traction!
