Since day 1 of swapping my tranny and doing the clutch I've always had gear rattle (in neutral clutch not pressed) with my car. It's pretty annoying... I run mobil1 ATF in it, and was wondering if there is an additive that would thicken the fluid and possibly dampen the noise some? Or am I likely stuck with the noise until I do another overhaul?

I too have had the same problem for the last twenty thousand miles. The only thing I did different was have my diff welded by tysho.

I think it's the mobil fluid if you're experiencing the same problems. I'm going to try using castrol syntec now when I get my sho on the road. Maybe there will be a difference?

There was a tsb on the noise I had, it goes away or quiets down if I push the shifter towards a gear. It's neutral gear rollover or something and it can be loud and very annoying. It's even more annoying considering it wasn't there before.

I thought I forgot something when I put the trans back together, but it wouldn't have lasted this long I think.

Had the exact same thing. I opted to put a wavetrac in, instead of welding the diff. Had the car all put back together and started it up and I could hear a rattle. My heart skipped a few beats when I heard the noise; thought one of the input shaft bearing races somehow fell out when I put the case halves together, but like you said; don't think it would have made it this long if that were the case. Plus, the shaking of the transmission after assembly did not make anything rattle. I don't recall EVER hearing the noise with my original trans, so if this fluid change doesn't rectify the noise I'll swap the wavetrac over into the original trans and do it all over.

I notice with this trans as well, I get some minor gear whine in first and second. I'll swap the fluid soon, and keep you posted; just trying to figure out if there is a thicker fluid that is better, or some kind of additive instead before I drain it all out.

I forgot to include that whining was noticable also, but I reinforced my motor mounts at the time so that could be the reason. Right when I turned the key after reinforcing the mounts I was like wow, I could feel the starter.

The castrol I have was probably sitting in the auto parts store for sometime. It wasn't in their system and there was dust on the four bottles. I'll look tomorrow, but i've never seen it that's why I bought it. I think it just says castrol syntec atf.

I wasn't happy when I drained the mobil. At the end there appeared to be a lot of metal in the oil. I hope it's not from the rattling.

It's not the tob, if it was the noise wouldn't go away when the shifter is pushed toward any forward gear.

That fluid I bought is castrol dexron III syntec.
