While I am gathering information I was wondering if anyone has a blown transmission case. The idea here is to use a gutted trans that can be easily transported for side by side comparison to the candidate transmissions.

Shoot, I just threw 3 junk cases away.

Just a suggestion - if you do go through with this, you may want to consider upgrading to the gen3 subframe at this point as well. I suspect that you'll need to cut and weld a new trans mount to the frame rail if you end up using a different transmission. You may as well go ahead and do it to the better subframe. I would recommend a 99 SLO subframe over a 96-99. The SHO subframe are more work to convert.

By the way, knowing absolutely nothing about the trans, the first one I'd investigate is the Mazda 6 as someone else mentioned. They are plentiful and parts should be around for them for awhile. They are both mated to similar engines in a sideways configuration.

Getrag makes it, and from what I've heard it's pretty hawt.
I owned a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT Turbo that had the Getrag 5-speed manual. I bought the car new and I went through 3 transmissions within the first 30k miles. I returned the car under MN's lemon law.
So I wouldnt' give any praise to Getrag for transmission myself...

getrag does the svt trans

I don't think putting in a different transmission would be all that pricey, just a lot of work

6sp altima and maxima trans, Acura TL trans, MS3 trans different then mazda 6 trans?

and I agree, i think our transmission is pretty strong already.....

lack of being able to change final drive ratios and the only LSD option is the quaife are the downside to our transmission

if you got so much power your blowing through transmissions left and right, your gonna be doing that to any oem FWD transmission you put in there, IMHO

But, there are several FWD trannys that aftermarket companies make really strong gear sets for ... at about 1/3 of what a custom set costs.

Not just a durability issue, but I think a different trans would be great just for parts. As long as the trans used is stillng being used, so as the parts for it do not become obsolete like ours.

Durability is not that bad outside of the dif. Which is easily fixed via Quaife. These trans take a beating (at least mine have).

More power to you for a swap though! Somebody get that man a case!

Here are some approximate numbers - ballpark, not guaranteed.

Bell housing mtg face to end of trans - 14"
Input shaft to axle shaft cl distance - 7.5"
Axle shaft is approx 4.5" below the input shaft
Max front to back distance - 21"

Can anyone confirm the bell housing mtg face to end of trans? This is critical. Still searching for a case!!. Thanks

Project has stalled. Still looking for a blown case. I may be under my car this weekend to check out my sloppy shifter cable. I could try to get the bellhousing mounting face to the end of the trans measurement pinned down. I really want to avoid cutting the frame rail so fractions of an inch could make or break this project.Ultimate goal is to boost my car and I don't want to deal with the obsoleted MTX repair parts and other issues. Hydraulic clutch actuation would be nice to have.Speedo and VSS integration will be challenging.

So you need just the 2 empty case half's, correct? If so I may have one for you soon. You will pay the shipping correct?:salute:

It has been several years since I had a transaxle out of the car (I am easy on clutches and gears) and I don't quite remember how it comes apart. Ideally I would like to have the bellhousing as well. I will take whatever I can get. Any help would be appreciated.

I pay shipping.

That's all you will need, the bell housing is integrated on one of the halves.
