I am getting ready to crack the case on my MTX that is making a ungodly screeching sound.

I am assuming it is some bearing inside.

My question is what is the correct way to open the case... face down, face up, sideways ??

I don't want parts falling out all over the place when I open it...

Also, ... anything else I need to look for?

Thanks...

you need a shop manual.

Or maybe I should say that I wouldnt loosen one nut/bolt on the case before I had read the shop manual cover to cover.

I second the SHOnut video cause some stuff will fall out of place, like bearing caps and springs. Some of it you can prevent by following instructions. Do you have experience with rebuilding transmissions?

No time to buy the video....

The tranny is out now and I need to open is ASAP. The guy who is helping me out has my car sitting in his garage and I need to get it fixed pretty quick.

I really need to open it today if at all possible.

I myself have not worked on a tranny but he has.... just not a FWD car.

I'm not worried about working on it.... just worried about parts falling out when I open it.

Any help is very much appreciated....

half-way there, I think.
There is a certian procedure for opening the case up, you need a shop manual or the video before opening it up. If you don't you could lose a spring and ball bearing and could possible damage some of the internal mechanisms. I can do it in my sleep now after watching Josh's video, seeing Gary Morrell open one up and then myself open up my tranny a couple of times. But it's a little tuff to explain it over the internet.

i will try to do this by memory since i am at work lay the trans with the bolts side up make sure that you have the trans in nuetral remove all bolts from the case halves. locate the 13mm shift rod locator bolt and remove. this bolt holds your shift stack in position remove it only if you plan to proceed. then locate the 10mm reverse rod pin bolt towards the top of the trans. be careful it is spring loaded and will sometimes spring out at you. take a rubber mallet or soft piece of wood and find the spot most likely to pry or hit i think the manual says to remove the reverse switch but i didnt, and it didnt seem to matter.
now that you have it apart i suggest you GET A MANUAL like the guys hear are trying to tell you this is a speicailty trans and was very difficult to dissassemble even with a manual and the help of this forum. i am pretty good with a wrench but i wouldnt even do it again without the manual for step by step proccedures. just go ahead and let one of those sincromeshes fall apart on you while you are trying to get it apart. all those little pieces go falling into every little crevice in your trans.
i am not trying to dicourage you jusy warn you
good luck brett

I'm assuming a helms manual is the only one that is going to help...right...?
