Mounts off?

You guys leave your mounts off until after bolting say an engine to the tranny. Some how I forgot how i got this thing out. I have a jack under the tranny, and a load leveler, but when I get close to bolting it up, the motor always wants to twist, and its being a pain. Anyway, its 1/2 way in there, I took the bracket that holds the a/c and front mount off, and was wondering if I should remove the rear mount too. I got tired of messin with it, as its 5:00 am now.. try again in the morning I suppose.


Also, what came running out of the hole where my axel goes? came out when I dropped the tranny down a little. Is that oil, or tranny fluid?

Should be ATF. Thats what logic tells me since to fill up your tranny with fluid you have to have the axles installed.

I decided to reinstall my engine without the tranny, partially because it looks too tight to do it through the top. I lowered my engine in with the mounts and the AC bracket attached, as well as the upper and lower torque limiters installed. My engine wanted to be unbalanced towards the rear of the car so I used my load balancer to rotate the front facing side of the engine "up". The other part of having to pull the front of the engine towards the wheel well was my fault because the hoist wasn't far enough towards the passenger side.

I'm not sure how I am going to install the tranny but I have a feeling I'm going to have to take out my nicely torqued subframe bolts, raise the car back up on blocks and put the tranny through the wheel well. I can't see it fitting any other way.

Well, my problem is once I get the clutch inside the bell, it just dosent want to cooperate and get square I suppose the right word is. I have to tip the clutch side down to get the clutch and pp inside the bell, then lower it a bit, level it out, lower a bit, level it out... until the crank is past the inside of the frame there, but then it just wont line up. I would leave the front mount on, but the ac accumulator is kinda in the way, and the bolts on the motor mount are right on top of the subframe, and dont wanna cooperate either. I'm about to go out again and see what I didnt see earlier.. was so close it seems...

thats why i pull both and reinstall both. its a lil easier to do.

now i'm 1/2 inch away, and cant get the tranny to rotate the right direction. Ugh this is a pita.. lol hopefully i'll get it in there soon. Gotta change the piviot point on the transmission I think. Hard to move it in sync with the engine tho.

I did it with an ATX...but I put it in with the motor/tranny bolted together. Seemed a lot easier. I left the rear mount connected to the motor - but had the front mount sitting in the sub-frame and let the motor lower down ontop of it. Good luck!

Well there are a few extra sets of hands on the way over.. hopefully we can get her to fall in. Looks like all it needs is a push forward, but I want to hold it when I do that so I dont jack up the PP fingers. More hands will help. I'll keep you all updated.

Another thing I thought would be handy are some long 18" drill blanks or something to help align it... hey wait.. i have some 3/8 concrete bits I might be able to turn around backward that might work.. I might have some intresting pics up shortly.. time to get creative..

well i got the rear mount to fall in the hole, and the top half of the motor is pretty much tight against the tranny, but i cant seem to get the lower half to cooperate. driving me about nutz.. lol guess i'll try again tommorow..

Suspend the tranny from the clutch cable hole. This way all the weight is off of it while you position it.

If you have a few 2x4s, make a makeshift support structure.

Yea, I'm always constantly watchin the jack I have under it, and it isnt holding any weight, but the front side of the motor just demands to be higher, my load balancer is all the way to the rear side of the motor even. I am trying to get the bolts to pull it together but its just a little too tight for me to just pull them tight. I get the feeling like its getting stuck somewhere. The two lower bolts, the ones with the sleeves are the ones I'm trying to get snug first, figuring it should pull the rest of it together, and they get a few threads in, and then start getting really tight, so I know the difference of the angles there are making it difficult and I dont wanna risk snapping one of these bolts, then I'd have some real fun on my hands.

I'm going to get it suspened and take the two bolts out because I remember pulling this thing out, it just poped off, easy as pie. Just cant get the motor to tip the right way for some reason.

I also have both motor mounts on in hopes they will fall into the holes and square itself up, but I got loose chains on that side.. lol Pulling the bolts out again should fix it I hope..

Well after taking everything out and looking at it. The motor wants to twist forward, and that alone is causing other issues when I try to straighten that out, its something to do with the way its on the crane I'm sure. I just would hate to take it out again, and do it all over. Stupid thing is right there.. just wont get in. Will I be pushing against the pressure plate a little? It wont swing forward either, I mean I can tell when its inside the center of the pp, but just dosent want to move that last inch.

I give my props to others that have done this before.. this kinda sucks..
