Anyone in the know care to explain how bad or broken motor mounts can effect tranny and engine performance? Idling? ECM?

Bad mounts will cause no effect on idle, PCM strategies, etc. Now, you may "feel" the idle differently due to the bad mounts, but operationally the engine still runs the same. Performance wise, 99% of it is how it feels. There may be an instantaneous loss of ability to put power to the ground while the drivetrain is shifting, but it probably doesn't amount to more than a fraction of a second.

If your mounts are bad, there will be the tell tale sign of a rub mark on the front of the intake where it says SHO. That is if it has been bad for awile. I would apply the brake and put it in drive. Give the engine a little load with the throttle and you will see excessive lifting of the motor. Generally it is the front mount that goes bad first, and not the rear, but if the front has gone really bad awhile ago, added stress is transferred to the rear mount.

Yeah, that split second while the ATX is shifting, there is a loss of power to the wheels, but generally it has only been with the first gear shift. I've been taking it very easy and gentle until after the first shift. After, it's SHO power!!!

That's pretty much exactly what I said. When I referred to the drivetrain "shifting" I was referring to the engine and tranny moving under the hood, not the transmission shifting gears. Again, it's not a loss of power, just a momentary delay in getting that power to the ground, which will only really be noticeable on a hard acceleration from a stop.
