I have replaced all 4 upper strut mounts, outer tie rod ends, and installed ALSBs. That got rid of 90% of my car's clunking. But I still am getting one annoying clunk. It seems to happen with loading/unloading of the drivetrain.

Will I get a clunking if my motor mounts are bad? Any other things to check for based on my symptom? Thanks!

You can check the front and rear motor mount from inside the car with it running.

Put it in first gear and let out the clutch but hold the brake. If it is bad you will see the motor rise in the front higher than normal. You can check the rear mount by putting the car in reverse.

Another tell tale sign that your front mount is bad is a rubbing mark on the intake from it hitting the hood pad.

Check your strut rod bushings and especially the metal cups that hold the front ones to the sub frame. You can check the motor mounts by opening the hood then apply power to the engine with the brakes on and watch the engine in the space between the hood and the firewall. See how much if any movement you get. And if the noise happens when the motor moves.

I hate to hijack this thread. But tonite I was shifting into 2nd and CLUNK! From there on I knew there was something wrong. Luckily I was about a mile away from home. I parked the vehicle, hood up put the car in first, the motor moves towards the firewall, quite a bit. I put it in reverse, applied some throttle, it moves away, quite a bit. When I drove up my road, it there was some resistance in the gas pedal. Could this be because the engine is moving away and tugging on my throttle cable?..
I took a look at the motor mount up front. It looks as if it's been rubbed. There's about a 3/8" space between the rubber and the side of the mount.

Verdict? New motor mounts Front and Rear??

Yes sir, Front and rear mounts are in your future!

Oh and check the tranny mount when you are in there! :)

The tranny mount may be ok, but after time it will delaminate. I know the one off of my old '94 was toast. I found that out when i changed the clutch.

You could check it by putting some pressure on the bottom of the transmission with a jack and a block of wood. Not too much just enough to start lifting the trans side. You should be able to see if its still together or not.

Mount struts are a noise and vibration thing. They ALSO help out the motor mounts.

If you reinforce your motor mounts you can ditch them

I can clearly see that the Front Mount is broken. I can see the rear but, I cannot tell if it's broken or not. I did the test where I put the car in reverse and the motor moved up quite a bit.

Not likely. Like most well engineered cable operators there is a loop in the path that helps negate the effect that engine movement has on the cable. Also, the throttle cable is attached near the center axis of the rolling movement.

I recieved my rear mount from the 'Zone. It's the round kind??? It this correct? Has the old square been replaced with this one? I can take a photo if anyone wants to see it. I had to have it ordered. It took 2 days. If this isn't the right mount. I'll be very unhappy!

Sounds like you got an ATX mount... you need the "solid" mount. They have it labeled as solid for the MTX.. but its not really solid.

Sal... I would also check you inner tie rods. If this problem still persits.
