So I am in the process of replacing the CPS. Since the car is jacked up I decided to look into my oil leak problem. I thought the first thing I would do is try to snug dowm any loose oil pan bolts(always worked on my 302's). As I was looking around for bolts I noticed a bolt so loose I could remove it by hand. This loose bolt was going from the oil pan(?) into the transmission. I figured that there "should" be another bolt very similar on the other side. I also noticed at this time that the oil appered to leak from between the transmission and the engine/oil pan. there was/is a small gap between to two parts and I can move the thin metal gasket with my finger nail. The bolt towrds the front of the engine is gone compleatly and the rear one was loose as stated before.
My questions are:

1. Will any bolt I find at the hardware work(as long as I match it up ofcourse)?

2. does this new bolt need locktite?

3. how tight should the 2 bolts be? should the end result close the gap up tight?

4. Would oil even leak from this area or is the leak from somewhere else(the entire bottom of oil pan and MTX is covered with oil)?

5. do you think with these two parts bolted together properly that would fix or help my hard to shift issues?

Any ideas would be great.
Thanks
A

Ya, just take the other bolt and get one the same as it. The gap between the trans and engine will not close up. It's kinda like a vent hole, incase your rear main seal is leaking it wont fill the clutch up with oil. The metal sheet you can touch is a dust plate to keep debri out. If the oil seems to be coming from there, then there is a good chance that your rear main seal is leaking or the oil could be coming from the transmission, unless i'm mistaken there is a seal on the input shaft of the trans. There also is the possibility that it is just leaking from the oil pan. There is a rubber seal on both ends of the pan, the front seals on the oil pump and rear just seal around the bottom of the block, however it would be pretty hard to tell if it was the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket with the engine and the trans bolted together. But the simple answer is usually the correct one and, your oil pan bolts were loose;)

Clean all the oil off the bottom of the engine and trans, watch for exactly where it's commin from and what type of fluid it is, also watch the fluid levels to find out if it's oil or trans fluid.:thumb:

The 2 bolts between the oil pan & trans will do nothing to create / prohibit an oil leak back there.

The pan is secured to the block by the vertical oil pan bolts / nuts.

The rear main carrier is secured to the block by its own set of bolts.

You can drop the pan & reseal it, and if it still leaks it's the rear main, which you're not going to address without separating the trans (and oil's cheap)...
