Stupid problem I have with two Gen I SHOs. Black tar looking stuff on the parking brake pedal. It seems to be coming from up above somewhere. I am looking at a '91 Emerald Green SHO+ and it has the same thing but even worse. It is all over the pedal, kick panel and the carpet under the pedal. Any idea where it comes from, how to stop it, and even more importantly what to clean it off with? Oh yeah, my emergency brake light won't go off either, but I found lots of posts on that subject.

There is this tar like stuff on the top of the pedal where it hits the switch that turns the dash "brake" light on and off. Its really sticky and a pita. I pulled mine off but now the problem is that my "brake" light stays on even when the ebrake is not on.

I think it used to be a more solid, but still soft, piece that is for exactly what you described. Over the years I think it tends to break down into that goo. I had the same problem in my GenI.

Both of my Gen I SHOs had the same problem. The source of the La Brake-a tar pits was the rubber bumper on the parking brake switch plate. It seems that a badly made batch of these bumpers found out how to de-vulcanize into the liquid rubber that they were made from.

I used Goo Gone and intake manifold cleaner to cut through the goop on the switch plate and the soup that dripped onto my black carpet. I had some show up on more than a few pair of shoes too. Nasty stuff. That part's source contractor probably got left out of later Ford products.
