OK, I have been applying for an engineer position at all local railroads with little avail. A gentleman who came into my shop about a week ago told me to apply at Union Pacific if I didn't mind relocating. So last week I did. When you do the application they say it takes a few months to process and then you will be invited to a hiring session if you pass the application. Well, I just got a call today that I am invited to a hiring session in Boone Iowa. I was invited to a hiring session way earlier than I thought so it kinda caught me off guard. The next problem is that they gave me very little notice to when the hiring session is to take place. 1/3/07 just a bit more than a week's notice. Getting there is no problem (it's only about a 9 hour drive) but the crappy part is I am going to have trouble getting off for a few days without my job realizing something is up. Unfortuneately the company I currently work for usually forces you to resign if they find out you are looking for a new job because they immediately assume you will steal things when you acquire the new job. Not only is it risky in the job situation but leaving all of my friends and family behind and everything I know is very hard for my to comprehend. It is an awsome opportunity to make a great living and it is really hard for me to decide because I have to decide very quickly and make all of these changes very quickly. I guess I am just venting in frustration but I just wanted to get some input from you guys.

You gotta go where the money is. Call in sick on the interview day and see what Union Pacific has to offer. Evryone would like a job next door to where family is but that is impossible. Figure out what you want a good paying job or living close to where you are at. Sounds to me like you can't have both.

I think it would be pretty tough even for me to explode one of those giant two stroke diesels. Hmmm.... they already make over 1000hp and over 1000 lb/ft. I wonder what vast amounts of nitrous nitrous would do  My theory is nitrous on anything is fun.

I agree, call in give them some lame excuse that will give you a few days off and see what they have to offer. Or even if it sounds like you'll get an offer. I had a hireing session with Northwest Airlines for Flight Attendent bootcamp when I was younger. was gonna be alot of work and I was packed and ready to go until my physical day came and I knew I couldnt pass cuz a few days earlier I found out I was pregnant. I don't regret not doing it at all because if I had I don't think I would be where I am now.
If they offer you the job you'll have to weigh your options,if a great job with more money is worth relocating away from family and friends. Just remember you need to do what makes you happy not everyone else. Friends and family can visit, you can come back and visit too so don't feel bad leaving people behind, It's not the end of the world. That is one thing the Military did teach me.
Good Luck and I hope you get the job, great jobs and good pay are hard to come by.
