Lots of miles. Ask how long ago the car had a 60K tune up on it. Also ask what was done. You may want to look into rod bearings at this milage. Other than that, these motors will run for a long time with proper maintenance.

Sdpatt has i think around 250K or so. I also know that Snowwind has over 300k on the original motor. As Chris said with the right maintenance these motor will last forever.

If the engine had a good oil change an oil brand history, there should not be great concern about major bearing wear. If the oil history is clouded or the engine had not been maintained on the 60,000 mile valve gapping and 60K or 100K timing belt service, then there is reasonable doubt as to the integrity of the hardware. Is the owner willing to provide the maintenance history?

the major problem is, i will have no maintenance history AND i looked at it again today and its a ATX. i failed to notice that last time i looked at it. its got a small rattle when it idels too. no knok/tap, juat a rattle. very metalic sounding. its at a crappy little car lot so they really have no idea about the history of the car. other than the rattle the power seat will not move front to back and the blower motor does not work. but the outside is great, in fact its *******.

If your looking for an MTX don't "settle" for an ATX... If the car isn't what you want, then you will regret it later.

I'm not bashing on ATXes at all, cause god knows they are a blast to drive... not to mention I have one, and love it to death... I'm just saying, if the car isn't what your looking, then wait until you find one that is..

Rattles at idle are not a good sign. Another test is slowly rev the engine to about 1500-2000 rpm with the throttle shaft while listening to the engine. As you let off the throttle, does the engine make any knocking noises as the piston pins and cranks bearings are unloaded? Neither is a good sign. I advise that you stay away from this car if you want one that will last longer than one oil change.

Here's a tip from a fellow 95 ATX'er with 67k....you should seriously try an mtx first...had I found this board before I would be driving Aspects car instead....The MTX is a more reliable tranny. Im sure a shift kit and an LPM will make u feel better later, but its like this: There are just some cars that have to be a 5 speed:

1: Jeep Wranglers
2: Ferrari's (Come on who would drive an ATX Ferrari instead of an mtx?)
3: SHO's

Dont get me wrong....I love my car...I love my ATX when Im eating a Combo Meal, but looking at Huntervf's rear end is not fun during a race.....

Are you saying that you don't mind looking at his rear end when you are not racing? I wish I hadn't read that. :)

check for noise, have the compression checked, include a bleed down, which will tell you a lot about wear.
After you find one, install an Amsoil dual remote filter kit, which will also save your starter from dying from oil dripping, use K & N or Mobile 1 full flow filters along with the bypass filter, change every 10K or so, use Mobile 1 or Redline or other fine synthetic. Engine should last over 300k easy.

Well, I've gone 212k miles in my '92 with the original engine. I rebuilt the tranny(w/ quaife) at about 205k. Right now it is not my daily driver. But every time I drove it, it would reach redline. I just made sure to do the required maintenance. Oil changed every 3k.

By the way, just got it registered and back on the road again after a year. Damn, too much driving my Accord and Town Cars for a living. That car flew like it was ****** off at me for being away so long. My car is in not-so-great shape body wise and the interior is stripped but I'm autocrossing tomorrow and look to do some damage.

Um, that was to the competition, uh not my car. Bye now.

I affirm that 311K is a realistic number of miles for an SHO.
I am bringing Snowwind out of retirement. Only put 800 miles on over the last year. He was growing stiff and I am selling Lucille...
So, for a while he will be driven daily and most of that is freeway travel in Houston.
I'm looking at probably putting in a replacement fuel pump since his has begun to whine.
Think the original one has had all it can take. eek! eek!
