I am almost done rebuilding my mtx trans, and I am at the point where I need to reshim all of the shafts in the transmission. The factory service manual says to replace them with 'maintenance shims' if the bearings have to be replaced.

So i need to either get ahold of a set of maintenance shims, or I was thinking of going with the peelable shims from shonut, as they should allow for the maximum efficiency.

Do you guys know what the fitting procedure is for the peelable shims? I read through the service manual, and found the procedure for the 'normal' shims, is it the same, or completely different?

Mike

tranny rebuild

If I am hearing you right, you are talking about the shims at the top of the tranny gear half of the case, one on the top of each shaft.

I was under the impression that the non-differential bearings were no longer available. also I did not do anything special with these shims, just cleaned them and coated w/ tranny fluid and re-mounted in the housing.

would love to hear more on this subject.

Yeah, it turns out that all but two bearings are actually still available. The reason that the two are not is that they are mixed inch metric diameters.

The input shaft (opposite clutch side bearing) is 1.25" id, and 65mm od, with a thickness (from the bottom of the inner race, to the top of the cup) of 18.25mm.

The output shaft (clutch side bearing) is 1.064" id, and 65 mm od / 18.25mm thick.

I measured the thickness, and one bearing was .005" thinner than the 18.25mm, the other was .007" thinner, which I am guessing is where the shims are coming into play. The service manual says to use maintenance shims if the bearings have to be repliaced (I am guessing here that they are just maximum thickness shims). Bizzy also told me that she just reuses the old shims, and has no issues with doing it that way. So I will just reuse the old ones.

So I ordered those bearings used from Pheonix, and Bizzy.
