Lower speedometer cable disconnected

I verified that my speedo cable came loose at the VSS on my 3.2... I'm assuming there's no way in **** to get it back in through the top of the car? What are the labor hours I'm expecting to have a mechanic do it? This seems like something that would be good to have a mechanic do since if I'm not mistaken, then y-pipe needs to be dropped and the car should be on a lift if possible. I'd assume a new VSS should be bought at the same time too

Jeff can you see the vss from the top? I have an MTX which I'm sure is different but if you can see it from the top I think you can do it. The directions I had called for access from the bottom. However, I did mine from the top with long extensions and a crow's foot socket to tighten.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is VSS? I'm hearing a "buzzing/ratchet" sound and the speadometer needle jiggles so I've determined the funny noise must be coming from the cable. Do you grease them? Is mine coming lose?

I've looked in several repair manuals and can't find any info on even where the cable goes after attaching to the back of the speado. OR how to remove it from the back of the spead. cluster.

I was looking at the VSS location on AllDataDIY.com and it looks like a straight shot on the MTX but the ATX disappears under the exhaust header and is deep into the back of the engine. I think it has to be gotten at through the bottom of the car... The MTX seems to be a straight shot down though.

I found book times of 1.8 hours for changing the cable but I don't know if that's the upper cable or lower cable. It seems like it would be the lower cable since the upper is gotten to by pulling the cluster and should be less than 1 hour.

Regarding the loud speedo cable.. you can grease the core but it might be better to just buy a new one.

Oh yeah... regarding the location of the speedo cable.. it comes out directly in-line with the center of the instrument cluster (of course) near the master brake cylinder, curves down 90 degrees and connects to the bottom half with a hairpin shaped clip. It's black so it looks sort of like a rubber hose.

I tried to find the speedo hole on an ATX with a mirror from under the car and still couldn't find it. The MTX is a very simple, straight shot with the speedo cable, but the ATX is a test of manhood.

Damn... this doesn't look good. It looks like I'm going to have a mechanic do this. Bright side is that the VSS is like $20 or less at Autozone so when I get bent over on labor, at least the part won't **** me.
