Today my low coolant light came on. I checked it out, and the outside of the reservoir is covered in the coolant. The hose connections out of the rerservoir seemed to be fine. It looked like it was coming from the cap, but I am not 100% sure. The cap felt tight, however, not as tight as maybe it should have been. How tight should that cap be on? Any idea if that is what is causing the warning light and chime( <-- that is pretty cool.)? And how much does coolant cost?

When the cap is properly tightened it will "click" like a fuel tank cap.

Warning light is activated by the absence of coolant on the sensor located on the bottom of the coolant overflow tank.

Coolant prices vary but you should probably be paying between 6 and 9 dollars per gallon for coolant concentrate.

It chimes? That's cool! On my black 91 it had a faulty coolant sensor and sometimes the light would come on, but it never chimed.

Unplug the sensor and never worry about it again, that's why the tanks are see through.

Question: where's the easiest place to unplug said coolant sensor? My buddy's '96 has said "LOW COOLANT" for two years now!

Thanks.

Roman,
I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday. I didn't see much evidence around the cap, but did notice that it wasn't very tight. I topped off the resevoir and am going to keep an eye on it.

I'm wondering if Kirk pulled one of the coolant lines and didn't tighten it all the way because I'm getting a coolant smell in the passenger compartment with the vent on. Maybe a heater hose? shrug I''l keep you posted.

I think I just took my tank out and pulled the plug.

Ryan,
Yes that is the exact same thing that happened to me. I am thinking that it might have something to do with what Kirk did, maybe he didn't screw the cap on all the way or something. I filled it back up, and all the coolant is still in the tank, so it's all good. thumbs_u

Along with my 1997 SHO, I also have a 1998 wedgewood blue "Eddie Bauer" 4x4 Expedition. When the washer level is low it tells you in the instrument cluster and also chimes as well. I would expect the SHO to probably chime as well for coolant and washer levels. Why not just order a new sensor, I wouldn't think they would cost all that much and probably wouldn't be all that hard to replace it yourself.

Nope, there is no chime to let you know that your washer level is low. I have run it bone-dry on more than one occasion. The coolant is the only one so far that has chimed at me.
