Last night I was in a large parking lot and there was fresh rain on the ground, so it was pretty slippery. I took the opportunity to get my car moving, and break the back end loose just a little by jerking the wheel hard, and then snapping it back into place.... I was practicing recovering the rear end of the car in the case of oversteer.

Anyways, I did a few times at passes around 30-40 MPH. Then I started slowing it down. As I got slower, I was having to crank the wheel harder. At about 10 MPH, I cranked the wheel hard left, and the car made an awfullly loud whining noise as the back tires slid. Once I corrected it, the whining noise cut.

Is something broken or protesting?

check your power steering pump. Classic ford problem.

Replaced with a used (but well working) unit about 5 months/4k ago...

I was thinking that it was something that couldn't handle the extra stress (obviously, since it it only happened under stress)I'd I'd like to take it as an early warning...

Check your rack and CV's too.

It sounds like a power steering pump, though. Fords have squeaky pumps. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it.
Does the steering feel like it is loosing power too? I don't think it has anything to do with loss of traction.

However,
maybe you are just being paranoid. Were you braking while sliding? Sliding + Braking = ABS and ABS = whining.
Also, at slower speeds, the wheel is ALWAYS harder to turn.

Don't freak out just yet, drive it on the roads in normal condidtions. Put all the evidence together.
