Well as some of you may or may not know, I am looking to pick up a cheapo 92 that has a bad noise coming out of the water pump area. Is the water pump itself going out? Or are there bearings in that area that need replacing? Help! shrug

Jeremy, stop the engine and grab the water pump pulley with your hand. If you can rock the pulley back and forth or up and down and feel any movement in the bearings, the bearings are worn. A noise as you described is usually caused by a slipping belt. Either the belt is too loose or the water pump is very difficult to turn. The former can be adjusted, the latter requires replacement of the pump.

Didn't I tell you to stay away from that car?

Anyway, check the idler pullies also while you're at it since you seem intent on spending your money.

When my rear idler pulley bearings collapsed, the back of the belt was just rubbing over the stationary pulley until it finally melted.

Well my brother needs to drive a car on a limited budget, and it needs to be something that I can fix things on if they break. When you are looking for cars in the $1000 and under range, beggars really can't be choosers in this aspect. I have quite a few "hand-me-down" parts off my 93 that will work on the 92. (plugs, wires, etc etc) and most all of the top end work I can probably do myself, or ship it over to Scotty in Dallas to do. All in all if I can get this thing up to par well for another $1000, I don't think that is too bad of an investment, especially for a car with only 109k. I eventually plan to just play with it as a daily driver/weekend track beater, and save my 93 white one for when I really wanna taste sho performance! thumb

I have the same problem going on now, but i have a new water pump. But i think the noise is coming from my compressor pulley. The compressor or clucth needs to be relaced anyway...any ideas?

Well I settled on $1000 plus 24 hours of shop labor my brother and I are going to work off for him. He is an older guy that has a bunch of pristeen 30s-50s era automobiles and that is why he wanted the money is to hire someone to clean up his shop. Pretty good deal all around, and everyone is happy!

Because you will only hear the squeal through the stethescope when it is touched to the part making the noise, or that part will be the loudest.
