Hey there, hoping some of you can give me an idea of what I might be looking at. I have a 90 MTX with 276k miles and it is completely factory stock. Been driving it around for about a year now without issue.

This morning I started it up to leave for work and the shifter was completely slack. No gears at all. I could move the shifter to the location where it would normally be in gear, but there's nothing there. When I went to where first is, it got stuck... hard. I can't get it out of first for nothing.

I last drove the car on Friday, didn't have any issues at all. When I parked it I left it in first and set the parking brake, as I normally do. It wasn't moved all weekend. I am hoping that it's just something in the cable shifter. I'm going to get under the car tonight and see what I can see, but in the mean time has anyone seen anything like this?

Thanks!

Start by pulling the shifter section off the console and see if everythings still kosher under there. I went through this with my '90 luckily i was able to band aid it with zip ties to get me home.

If it is a cable shifter, one of the ball socket ends, either the trans or shifter, has broken off. If it is at the trans side, crawl under and you can pop it back on and fasten with a zip tie. REmove the shifter console to see if it is broken at the shifter side. You can get the repair kit from SHOsource for like $20 IIRC.

It is a cable shifter. I popped the console and boot off and everything appears to be moving like it should be under the shifter, but I'll remove the shifter itself this afternoon.

I really hope it is just the shifter. I like this car...

Ordering new bushings from SHOSource right now :)

Edit: I'll update this thread with pics from the swap out once the parts get here. Thanks!
