I was driving down the freeway yesterday when my engine lost igniton power. The car cranks fine, but will not fire. I have tried replacing the DIS and the coil pack with ones i know work. While cranking the tachometer does not function, what does this indicate? I need help ASAP so i can get my car back on the road again, thanks in advance

I pulled the codes, and got 542, 211, and 557. I looked them up but its not exactly in english, will someone please tell me what i need to look at in order to fix this porblem, thanks

Tyler

Ditto on the CPS
542 secondary fuel pump circuit fault. This can be stored if you stall the car.
211 I Think is directy related to the CPS
557 Fuel pump primay circuit falure. Maybe you have two problems on your hands. The CPS and the fuel pump. I am sure someone elese will also help out here just to back me up.

I replaced the CPS over the summer, kinda weird that it would fail this soon, and the way it failed seems abnormal. It failed quickly while driving at constant speed and it wont restart. I have no problem changing it, but is this a sign that something else electrical may be causing problems?

The failure mode for electronic components is usually very early in the expected design life or very late. There could be a problem in the CPS circuit, check the connectors first but keep in mind that CPS failure can be very intermittant. I would replace that sensor just to be safe (and make sure there is no leakage around the water pump).

211 (Memory) Ignition PIP (profile ignition pickup - CPS) signal was erratic or missing

Since the CPS was quite young, you should check to make sure that the mode of failure wasn't due to its installation. If it was a bad unit, then you were just unfortunate, but if it was due to the install, make sure that you don't repeat the error. Make sure that the gap between the crankshaft pulley's sensor ring and the CPS is .03" on all three vanes. You may want to inspect the CPS and sensor wheel for scratches that would indicate contact had been made. If you are pulling the pulley off the crank, check the inside surface of the sensor wheel for contact. When checking the gap, if one or more of the three sensor vanes measures an appreciably different gap, you may want to adjust the vane to equalize the gaps.

My last timing belt change over Christmas last month, I found one of the three vanes to measure a smaller gap on the order of .02" I used Vise-Grips to gently and gradually reshape the vane until the gaps measured the same.

Also be aware that the gap can chage after you torque the Phillips screws down on the CPS if the gap was measured with the screws somewhat loose. Recheck the gap after tightening the screws.

These measures cam possibly prevent a repeat of problems during the installation, but they can't prevent the failure of a defective unit. What brand of sensor did you install? I'd like to know because I had formerly used and recommended the Borg-Warner part, but have changed to the Wells brand due to there quality, lower price and excellent customer support information on their site.

I installed a ford cps, dont know who they had make it. I did check the gap with the screws tight, but i didnt check the gap on all 3 vanes, never heard to do that but it makes good sense. thanks for the input
