Loose steering

First make sure everything in the front end is tight (inner/outer tie rods, balljoints, subframe bushings, strut rod bushings, wheel bearings) then replace the steering gear. You could try to tightend up the gear but it is a long drawn out procedure and usually ends up with a binding concern.

Would the vss have anything to do with it? I think mine is bad and know I have the speed steering thing. Just wondering-

No, VAPS won't give you any play...just make it real easy to turn at higher speeds (full assist at all times). If you notice the play while sitting still or a low speed then something is worn.

crawl under the dash and look at the slider assembly while turning the steering wheel. check the clamping bolt while you're there.

clunking noisees

i know i need a new inner tie rod because i can move the wheel backand forth but what is the clunking?? i replaced my subframe mounts so i was thinking its must be the strut mounts..
