Hey SHOforum,

A while back I had a 1994 SHO ATX, I loved my car but times got tuff and I had to sell it. Now I have the money to buy another SHO but not as a DD so it will be a project car.

My question to you guy's is where can I find performance parts as far as the Engine internals go i.e. Pistons, Rods, Crank, ETC. One thing for sure is that I'm going with a STS turbo setup. I will take any and all suggestions and since this build will be over about 2 years, so even if it's expensive I would still like to know about it.

So thanks in advanced for all your help.

2010 The SHO has Officially been REBORN!!!

Cheaper and a lot easier to buy one fully ready; look in the classifieds at the S/C MTX for sale now

For a boosted set up the stock crank and rods are fine (both forged). Forged pistons are avialable at shonutperformance.com. You will also need a new MAF, injectors, a tweecer, fuel pump, FPR and a new differential for the trans (if mtx). Besides that you should probably upgrade the brakes and make sure the suspension is in good shape.
Of course, before any modding is done all the maintinance (60k) and prevenative maintnance (rod bearings) should be done.

THe list can go on and on.

the stock crank and rods can handle some power but youll need to have them worked over by a machine shop. you should look for a low mile block, crank and rods.

Why is that?
I'd at least get em flash ground and shot peened personally...

I made that post from my phone and even though I was browsing the internet it still limited me to 160 characters as if it was a text message. plus I don't like to type with my thumbs.

You will comprimise the integrity of the molecular structure of the metal if you grind on the crank, as it has been heat treated.

Why is that?

I know I shouldn't even open my mouth .... but ...

Like Tim said, Why?

I got a 3L with stock crank, 3L rods, and 3L oil pump. Yes, it has Wiseco LC pistons, but nothing has been done to the rods other than fitted with ARP bolts. It sees north of 20 psi of boost, via blower. The engine has 20K miles on her and some of those miles have went by mighty quick. Puts down some good numbers.

The crank has been turned down 0.020" too.

and for giggles, I've been known to through a small shot of NOS over the boost.

Please explain and specify exactly how you would compromise molecular stucture due to grinding. I have a feeling a phase or a TTT diagram is in order :theyareontome:

The factory crankshafts are gas nitrided which increases the hardness of the journals (proven via Rockwell hardness testing). That said, taking 0.02" off via grinding the journals undersize should not take you past the increased hardness layer.

BTW, on a budget you can "cheater destroke" the engine down to ~ 9.5:1 CR with the stock pistons.

grinding is regarded by some to create cracks in metal that could cause a break under heavy stress.

Couldn't you also use thicker head gaskets to lower Comp ?

Surface hardness of the metal doubles from about 30 to 60 C Rockwell with the heat treat nitriding process to a depth of about .02
