I have my 93 MTX in the shop getting a leaking water pump replaced (covered under my warranty), and being the cautious person I am, I decided to purchase a timing belt, cps, and cid to also be replaced since they're all in the same general area. But they're quoting me like 3.4 hours of labor to replace these things in conjunction w/ the water pump replacement. They were givin me a 'deal' cuz he said the timing belt itself is like 2.9 hours, etc etc, but it seems like if you already have all that stuff off for the water pump replacement labor time should be a lot less than 3 hours. Someone educate me cuz I'm getting more and more upset that I bought all this stuff and not can't afford $300+ for the labor.

I doubt the dealership 'pros' are likely to remove the timing belt or remove the cps before replacing the water pump. What do they care as long as the car runs when they hand the keys back to you.

The additional time they quoted you is just silly. Done properly, those things are removed before the pump is pulled.

I highly suggest getting the 60k video and doing the job yourself. There are also online procedures available with pictures. Ask Scott (sdpatt) for his procedure and follow it. Use the others including the video as an illustration.

I'm sure there are SHO people in your locale who would help you.

Good luck,
Tom

It's easier when replacing the WHOLE waterpump like the dealership does (not just the pump-front) with the T-belt off. It's not required for the pump-front only.

Ballpark 4 hours for everything engine-front - front crank seal, WP, Timing Belt, Crank & Cam sensors. Longer for cam seal replacement. Remember that rookie mechanics take longer, and that fast mechanics go by book value to increase their profits. Oh, and don't always trust the book either, assuming it's on the high side - check out how long to change a clutch on the SHO. IIRC, they allocate about 2-3 hours. :)

Thanx for the replies. I bet I could change the CPS, CID and Timing Belt in an hour, tops, if they already had the engine open for the water pump replacement. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less from the dealership, cuz they're trying to make money. I really wanted to get that maintenance done :(

I was unclear. My point is that there will be quite a bit of fluid pouring over the timing belt and cps when the old water pump is removed. My system was drained and left open for several days while I did the work. Come time to remove the pump, there was still a considerable amount of fluid in the pump area. Had the timing belt or cps been in place, they would have been soaked.

Has the dealer performed the work yet? If not, do it yourself and do the entire front-end service as long as you're in there. You could also check out Midwest SHO in your area. The owner is a member here.

They should be doing it today (that's when the water pump should be arriving). I can't necessarily do it myself because the water pump is covered under the warranty, so all I have to pay is the $100 deductible.

Think about it, if it takes 2.9 hr. to do the belt that means he changed your waterpump & cps aswell as the cid for an additional 0.5 hr. labor thats a good deal for a waterpump, cps, cid. I would want my mechanic to spend at least a half hour to do these additional repairs. Quality work takes time!
