These two seem to be the most preferred struts on here, but which is better for a stock ride height car? I can get the GR2s for 175 shipped for 4 of them, is that a good deal or should I save up the extra 50 bucks and get Monroes?
:thankyou:

I would get the Monroes. KYBs have a history of just not lasting on SHOs.

Struts do not set the ride height. Springs do.

Many, many people have experience with both, and almost all of them will tell you to go with the Monroes. Don't just trust me! You'll see.

The GR-2's are far and away the worst option for the Gen 1/2 SHO.

Daaaang 20% I should get brakes while I'm at it. What else do I need to do while I'm at the struts? Mounts? Endlinks? Maybe some bushings? Don't want it to be 'like new' just need it to be safe and go where I point it.

I would probably do atleast the strut mounts too, endlinks are easy to do anytime unless you know they are bad already...

TBH, i would replace EVERYTHING you can while your in there.. ALL the bushings, ALL the links.. EVERYTHING.. Use new pinch bolts with lots of anti seize too.. especially with the rear. The rear is such a pain to do anything with.. mainly the sway bar links. Im going through the same thing, and ive put in about 4 orders to SHOsource because i keep finding new shit that breaks/looks worn or i need to break to get out.. ALSO, it never hurts to have extra parts. If you end up not using something. you can just as easily return it and get your money back. But for safe insurance i would purchase everything to bring your SHO back to the 21st century..

I'd really like to just buy a new everything for it but I've put a fairly strict budget of 1500 dollars on myself for this car, which includes the 600 bucks I paid for it and the 50 I already spent on new headlights. So with 1500-650=850 left to spend on the entire car dropping 500 into the suspension is not going to fit since it needs brakes, tires, and maintenance. Just trying to put together a quick car to get around in, really.

I would definitely go with the GR2s with stock springs. As I have posted before, the front GR2s can't handle the Eibachs once they get a few miles on them, but the rears did fine. With stock springs, you should get a better ride with the GR2s. FWIW, I will do GR2s when I replace the struts on my stock white '89.

For the best solution I would go with Konis, since the Tokicos are no longer available.

I have the KYB's with Intrax springs and they seem to be pretty good. The front is starting to get weak but I expected that. For stock springs, they'll probably hold up very well.

At the very least get new strut mounts. Every other part of the suspension can be replaced without removing the strut/spring. Those mounts are a total b**** to get to, though, unless the strut is already out. Make sure you get new front strut bearings too!

You might as well replace all those parts every time you do struts. Parts are cheap, but a PITA to get to later.

i say if your going to do it do it right just replace it all and be done with for a while. instead of tearing the suspension apart over and again to keep adding parts

Well that's all well and good, but a budget is a budget.

On the other side, if money is a severely limiting factor, you will probably not be happy with the SHO. It is a money-hungry car. Much like every other old car. You have to set aside a certain amount of money each month for unplanned maintenance. If you don't use it, roll it over, because something twice as expensive is going to break the next month.

I agree.. Thats a large reason why i suggested replacing everything. My strust have been known to be bad for over a year now, but i wanted to replace everything so i can cross suspension off my list of things to worry about. Im almost done with new brakes, and ebrake cable so i can cross that off.. which leave me with just motor left. That is something im taking care of this summer. While im not replacing EVERY part, im replacing a large majority of wear parts. I say save your money for a few more months and do everything then.. If your like me and have trouble "saving" money, buy the parts as you get the $$ and once you get everything install it in one big chunk.

Even tho your sway bars look good.. You could be loosening it and snap the bolt or link itself. You may soak your pinch bolts in oil for DAYS but there is a damn good chance youll break it (happened on my parts car). You could be prying the knuckles down and snap your strut bar's bushing cup.. The list goes on, and on.. I would, like i stated in my first post, get EVERYTHING you might need. If you go through and you dont need those pinch bolts, or sway bars... return them.. Or, you can get in there and they look worse than you thought... With these cars i always learned that there really is more than you can see or think there is! :thankyou:

^^That sounds oddly familiar.. ha (refer to my first post in this thread)

its the truth. save up buy everything and go from there. i put 200 aside each month then when i had enough money JACKPOT BABY! i just did the same thing i bought all new and i mean everything! car feels like it is riding on rails glued to the road:woo-hoo:

i love it
