i have a 94 ATX with 98k and ive had a knocking sound since 90k. the motor runs great. i have noticed it has gotten worse over the 8,000 miles. i used my stethiscope. and the sound is coming from the chain tensionor. possibly chain knocking from failing tensionor? and suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Yup, getting very common, actually. Unfortunately the tensioners were recently discontinued. Time to jump on a locator service or have your Ford dealership do that for you, and order them up.

Is it constant, or does the sound come and go?

Nope, just bad timing on the exhaust cam, or worst case, parts in the head floating around (which is never a good thing).

Anybody have any idea what contributes to the failure of these (timing chain tensioners)? Jelloslug just replaced his, with probably the last set of new ones around. Can they be reconditioned? Does synthetic oil keep them intact longer? How long can we expect them to last if oil is changed religiously and car isn't dogged ALL the time?

Just curious - any speculation welcome.

(Edit: WHOOO! 100th post! I'm like a expert now...)

I took my old rear one apart. I think its main problem was that it was gummed up rally bad. There was lots of crap on the springs and inside the bores. I am going to clean it up and see if it "feels" better. I also think that the plunger and springs from a front tensioner will fit in a rear tensioner making it possible to "rebuild" a rear tensioner with a new front one. I think the real source for all the noise from my heads (shobikes heard it. it sounded like a diesel eek! ) was the stretched timing chains. Both of them were stretched 1/2 a link or more letting them sag.

The front, rear, or both? PM me! I need a rear badly, and have been checking online with zero success. I have found a 'preowned' one, but would much rather have a brand new one.

yup, definitely sounds like a deisel
very embarrassing at stop lights.

I wonder if mine was caused by a clogged exhaust pipe (running it hard at times with out FREE flow)... what do ya think?
