Any way to rule out the injectors? Maybe one is a little clogged?

Also... when my tensioner was failing, my chain was rubbing the cover.. easy to see on the cover, and the only thing I found on the chain, was the links closest to the driver side were a little "brighter" than the rest.

Timing's right. Tensioner, keyway...all look fine.

I fired it up with no accessories or damper pully...knock knock...

Maybe it is that cam tensioner. I'll have to get (back) in there this weekend and see.

It looks like the oil pump to block gasket is newer...Not sure why they would have changed that to do the head gaskets.

I bet that it is. Though I don't know what would be causing the lower compression on #2.

The tensioners are the the same 3.0 and 3.2

I was going to reply about crank cancer but it seems you ruled that out. I recently had crank cancer in my SHO and there was no knock at all.

As for that knocking, it sounds similar to my engine currently (hard to tell different knocks using a digi camera microphone) and it is my crank pulley wobbling like crazy. I doubt the chain tensioners will be the culprit of that knock. I had a completely non functional tensioner in my last SHO and the sound it produced was more "tinny" as you would expect from the chain slapping the thin walled valve covers.

You said you pulled the rod caps off of this engine? Check to see if any of the rod bearings had unusual wear patterns. A bad wrist pin will cause a rod knock type sound and you will see rod bearings with more wear on the outside edges than the center area. Wiggle your rods and see if you have any slop up, down, left and right.

Best of luck, bro!

Luck is not a factor
It's either the cam tensioner or it's in the block and the block is a 3.0...where as I just happen to have a 3.2 sitting on the engine stand awaiting a set of heads.

Little concerning to hear about head gasket problems. The engine was probably over heated and who knows what else could have been damaged by excessive heat or water in the oil. If the oil pump was replaced that would lead me to believe the motor has seen better days. Have you had a chance to check oil pressure?

Regardless, I would consider scrapping it and finding heads/cams for your 3.2L project motor.

I took the rear intake chain guard off and the tensioner popped right up. There is very little slack in the chain and the pad has small grooves from the chain, but is intact.

The front looked better. I needed to press quite hard to depress the tensioner, the wear grooves were smaller, the piston wear witness marks covered about an 8th inch.

Those tensioners look good.

So I buttoned it back up using a different coil and it runs quite a bit better and the knock is much quieter.

It still needs plugs and wires so we'll see how it sounds with those next....I know....shoulda been first...but dissassembly and inspecion is free.
