I have a weird "chugging" sound from under my car. I dont really know how to describe it or whatever so i dont know what I should search the forums for. I can produce the sound when driving, basically short shift and give extra throttle at low rpms 1000-1500. It sounds like chugging type sound like something rattling or knocking. I can only hear it from under the car from like an echo off nerby houses and gaurd rails, so iI cant really stick my head under there when driving. I suspect its something like a motor mount or exaust rattle. A clutch chatter. But the one that scares me is possibly a rod knock. Hopefull someone has some advice on a way to determine what one it might be. I have no other reasons to beleive a motor mount is bad. I do know my exaust squeaks at the joint when the engine pivots. Hopefull someone has some advice on a way to determine what one it might be. Or maybe someone knows strait out. Any advice would be appritiated. I dont know what it is so I dont know if I am risking fate by driving it. Thank you.

im not going to say this 100% but i think my 93 mtx makes the same sound at that low of an rpm. Its a wierd sound and i cant hear it when im at higher rpm. If it was an exhasut leak I woudl think id hear it more at higher rpm. Dought its a mount but just open the hood and put the car in gear and move foward and back to see if the engien rocks foward or back momre then normal. Then get the car up on ramps of a jack adn start it. Put a screwdriver on the oil pan and listen and see if you head any abnormal knock. I dought is rod bearings you would know if it was them.:thumb:

When I mentioned the exaugst I didnt mean a leak. I ment the joint will pivot and make a squeek sound. I have done the motor mount test by watching the motor and have no reason to beleive that is the problem. If it was a rod knock wouldnt I hear it at all times instead of low rpm hard throttle?

Yes. Doing it the way I did in the video was only to reproduce the sound. Another example is clutch out 3rd gear, about 1500 RPM, give it lots of gas and makes same sound. Like I said the video was to reproduce he sound the best I could.

If you hear the noise when first starting out, it's "gear rollover". All the MTX's exibit the sound. It's normal.:thumb:

Sounds Horrible!

I've owned many MTX's over 15 years, but I've never heard that particular sound from them(except when I almost stall it trying to start in 3rd). Therefore I would not say that it's normal.

I have, however, heard that sound from Diesel Semi Trucks.

Everyone gets 3 guesses so here's mine....
Bad gas/Detonation or
Fragged Rod bearing/cracked piston or
Broken something or other in trans.

Let us know when you figure it out.
