I just changed over to a k&n filter and shortly after my ce light came on. I ran the codes and got a 172 code but my o2 sensors only have about 8000 miles on them and had no light previously. Right now I'm resetting idle speed and battery. Has anyone else had this problem after the switch. Also it did seem to be sucking fuel w/ a heavy gas odor fromk exhaust.
Thanks in advance

Well I just finished resetting idle and computer and during the drive afterwards the light came back on then went off for a few seconds then on and back off and stayed off. I checked codes again and this time I had a 176 instead of the orig. 172... weird !

Make sure the filter does not have too much oil. I have heard of problems with the MAF because the filter was over charged. I had my CEL come on after I recharged my filter, but it went away after about a day.

Thanks BS for the reply. The filter is right out of the box though oiled at the factory and I dont have a maf code, but maybe Ill get lucky and like you the light will just go away. After all I just did the swap yesterday afternoon and maybe the computer just has to adjust to more airflow?

I didnt touch it,but I did double check when the light came on for any obstruction ie. bug parts lol and it was fine and seated properly.

I installed a k&n panel filter a few weeks ago without problems. I enlarged the airbox opening and removed the silencer cone/inner airbox. I don't show any error codes or ce lights. Did you unplug anything when installing the filter? Maybe something came loose? I'd also suspect the sensor in the bottom of the airbox under the k&n filter. Too much oil causes problems. Maybe they messed up at the factory and put too much oil on. I thought mine was a bit oily. Keep us posted.

Oil from the K&N will not affect the air temp sensor. It will, however, affect the MAF sensor element to a great degree.

Remove the MAF and clean the sensor element wires. Then reinstall it and inspect for any misconnections in the airbox and that the air hose to the throttle body is correctly sealed and has no holes, cracks, or leaks. If there is air getting to the throttle body that has not been metered by the MAF, it will cause codes to be thrown due to improper F/A ratio.

Once the MAF has been cleaned, reset the computer and force the engine to relearn its idle. If the 172/176 codes persist, go back to the stock paper filter element and see if the codes go away.

Thanks for the replys everyone after I cleared the 176 code I took her for a long drive through all perf. ranges and no dreaded lights maybe it was a little over oiled and had to burn off or just adjust to the different air intake. It doesnt seem to be running rich any longer either...no heavy fuel odor from exhaust and and mpg seems to be back to normal. All connections seem to be snug and sealed. So far so good we'll have to wait and see.
Thanks again!

My bad, still throwing 176 codes, only stored though -not active, I get a light then it goes out and it's running like a champ. Is this just something to live with intermitatly until the computer figures out the correct air/fuel calibrations or does it only store o2 faults instead of a constant ce light?

Sorry I guess I was imtimidated about cleaning the maf filaments with all the warnings about how fragile they are, turned out to be a piece of cake, thanks for the nudge. Unfortunately after cleaning w/electronic contact cleaner and checking closely for air leaks and resetting idle after 20 miles of driving it threw another 176 code.Went back to the paper filter and after a long drive no codes. Apparently if I want added airflow Ill have to live w/ a stored code as a consequence. No thanks I guess the k&n goes on the shelf for now. Money gone,to bad too because it did seem to get a marked performance gain at mid range.

Sorry about all the posts on this subject just one last update for those considering the K&N.I went and tried the K&N one last time and reset idle. This time however I drove 300 miles and had no light and no stored codes.Everything is now OK.Either it was over charged from the factory or the PCM wasnt calibrating things right.I hope it is worth all the trouble though.
Thanks again for the responses!
