Hello! I have been reading alot of the great stuff on here and just thought I would contribute a few thoughts. I just completed some maintenance work on my 89. I have started using Castrol GTX high mileage oil and I must say I am really impressed with it! My SHO "loses" a little oil every change but since I started using the High Mileage version it seems to lose alot less and runs alot smoother. It is quieter and altogether more of a joy to drive. I always used Castol GTX but this new version seems great (my car has about 160K miles). I guess the additives work well. I also put in a KN panel filter and changed the fuel filter with a Motorcraft one. I also thoroughly cleaned the throttle body with TB cleaner and I am going to clean the MAF with Gunk MAF cleaner. I must say the car seems alot better! Just my thoughts!! Next I am going to do the tranny oil and plugs and wires.

Actually quick question...my wires only have about 20K miles on them, but are 6 years old. They are AC Delco. The car runs great. Worth changing? Ok cheers everyone, going to go **** on some ricers!:omgsho::thankyou:

There's nothing wrong with Castrol GTX, but I'd lose the K&N panel if I were you. They let in a lot more dirt (which shows up in oil reports as silicon, a very harmful element in an engine as it acts a lot like sandpaper), and frankly the dubious HP gains aren't worth that IMHO. My 95 showed highly elevated silicon levels for the two oil reports the K&N was installed for, and after I switched back to a paper filter, they shot back down.

Other than that, the plug wires would probably do well being changed while you're in there (if you're in there), and you seem like you're doing pretty well on maintenance overall. You should be fine! And welcome to the forum. :salute:

I would leave the wires alone, unless you have a light show at night, or have some strange symptoms.
If you find oil in your plug wells, then when you have the intake and the valve covers off, it is nice to put new plugs and wires on at that time. It is also rumoured that the oil in the plug wells ruins the wire ends, and you should change them if that happens. I don't know how true that is, but I would hate to put new wires on, then have the plug well problem, and have to buy the wires again.

Thanks for all the information. I have heard this about KN also. I didnt think too much of it as I have used them for years and enjoyed them...however your silicon story makes me wonder!!! Alot!! Hmm maybe I will change back to a paper filter. Thanks again:wave:
