Hey guys and girls, I'm new here, but not new to cars :). So I picked up a 1997 Taurus SHO with the Yamaha 3.4/207 for $2,200. Its in spetacular condition.. well now it is anyways. I purchased it, not even knowing what I was getting, due to the fact I was stranded in Cheyenne with $1,000 in my pocket and I worked at 4pm in Gillette. So I went to this used car deallership and was shown the SHO, with 3 flat tires and was told it was driven from wisconsin and they never even touched it..... So I talked them to $2,200.

Will it has 120,238 right now, I already welded my camshafts :) thanks to this forum :). I replaced the sparkplugs, removed the saxaphone, I cut the mufflers off and have 45 degree bends right behind the rear wheels :) (it sounds goooood) I cut a huge chunck of the stock air box out until I get my CAI. I also replaced the fuel filter, fuel Pressure regulator, and I bypassed the SARC with a switch, and my IMRC is ziptied open.

anyways with all that being said.. Im looking for preformance, cost isn't an issue as I will save up to it. I just dont know about certain things and need some help before I make any rash purchases and decisions.

!) Will the valve train from the Yamaha V* 3.9/242 fit on the 3.4/207?
2) Gaskets.... I didnt like how they were metal coated in weak plastic... Is there any replacements that are... well better?
3) Does 10% ethanol hurt our motors? As my old Taurus X SEL began leaking on the internal water pump once I used ethanol, as I usually purchase pure gasoline without ethanol.
4) is our transmissin setector or is it electronically controled shifts? Reason being is that I want to try to get select shift type feature installed, and eventually paddle shifts.
5) The flex pipe looks restrictive... really bad.. what size of pipe is our flex pipe, as I am going to replace the flex pipe and bypass the third cat that lead into flowmaster 90s with a custom 45 degree side exaust.

Sorry for the book, but please help me with this. I cherrish this car, as it is the only one I have ever purchased on my own. (well my mom gave me that 1000 for a gift so secretly its thanks to her.... but i need to look tough for the first impression for my new friends) lol.

Welcome djacks! 10% ethanol will not hurt anything in the SHO, but if you have access to ethanol free gas, so much the better. As far as valve train, are you referring to the one in the Volvo 4L?

Well you see about the valve train I was reading up and I'm not sure what vehicle it was from. A revised question I should've asked is, is there a top end that'll fit our 207/3.4l?
I had a grand am 3.1 and the 3.4 top end fit with all the goodies :) and just had a wild hair.

You could get your cams reground. I don't believe there was ever a big performance market for the V8 SHOs. Way back in the day there were several SHO performance shops, the most well known was the SHO shop in Cali. These SHOps most concentrated on the V6 SHOs.

having your imrc tied open is not helping your performance one bit. you should undo that, clean the intake if you need, but let it do its job - it is there for a reason.

Actually, that is bad info, Rubydist. There has, over the years, been a good deal of study on this and it seems that just opening up the intake all the time works just as well if not better. Apparently there was some error in the math computations for the lengths of the tubes and as a result the IMRC really does nothing other than change the sound of the motor, which, for some, is enough to keep wanting it working.

If you go looking about on the various Gen III sites, you can likely dig up the articles about this that tell the story in full.

in the words of Gilda Radner "nevermind"

sorry about that, its the first I had heard of that not actually helping. it certainly helps on all of the other vehicles I have had with that type of feature.

No biggie. I too only learned recently that the restricted air flow DIDN'T help at low end, as I'd been told it did, actually by the guy that welded my cams. I'm willing to take Stephen's word for it as he seems pretty well-informed with the Gen3. I can say for sure that he's right about people wanting to retain that nice low rumble the intake made at medium throttle when the IMRC opened up the secondaries (right around 3500 rpm I think?). My IMRC sits in my garage right now, as I imagine a day when I can clean out the carbon deposits from intake and have a brass flywheel machined to the dimensions of the crappy plastic one. I think with bi-yearly cleaning of the intake and/or use of the catch can mentioned earlier, it could be a lasting upgrade, though I haven't heard of anyone doing this.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Things have been crazy with me lately, and yes the imrc is broken which is why I have it zip tied open. However u guess all these questions are now irrelevant due to the new occurring issue that had happened with my vehicle. I posed a new thread with the issue regarding what I think is the cams...

Welcome, good luck with your mods. Just remember what it is and what it is not. Had mine for 15 years and outside a cam weld it's never seen a shop. Best purchase I ever made.

You do your own alignments and new tires onto wheels? I remember seeing something about a DIY alignment method but it seemed like alotta work for much less precision than a shop can provide.

Alright... Yes it has a seen a shop for routine Maintenance such as tires and alignment. The guy who welded my cams also replaced my imrc unit. I have also had a shop change the oil a couple times when I just didn't feel up to crawling on the ground in 0 degree temps. Speaking of tires, does anyone else seem to go through them quickly? I don't get near the miles the tires say they are rated for, despite frequent rotations.
