Hello all. I visited my local junkyard and found an 89 mtx yesterday. I ask the price for the MTX (car not for sale) and they said it was 112. I think thats a good deal. BUT thanks to Ford oh I dont know if it has 70,000 or 170,000. I still could use the MTX for part of the rebuild but my major question still remains.
1. Do you think it's worth it?
2. Whats the fastest way to remove it?
3. From a Shadetree mechanics point of view could I do it myself? (not the rebuild, the pull.)

Thanks for all the advice!!! you guys Rock!

If the diff is not blown (no holes in the case), then I would say it is worth it.

Unless they have a hoist so you can pull the whole engine w/trans, you'll have to drop the subframe to get the trans out. They likely have it sitting on the subframe, so you might have to ask them to move the supports.

Won't the salvage yard pull it for you? Seems like alot of liability to have some one drop the subframe on your property.

and yes if the tranny is only 112$ that is a good deal trust me i no and i garontee that the sinkroids are ****** in that tranny and you will not be happy with it go with the rebuils but doing it your self is going to be hard there is a lot of work involved , go to your local mecanic and it should be about 300 bucks

I have a good transmission I pulled from my car. It is in good condition. It has 161k on it. I am flexable about the price if you are interested.

Like SHO-ripper said for about $100 the tranny is definitely worth it. Even if you have someone rebuild it for you if you can't it's great to have one all ready to go and rebuilt if this car is your daily driver. That way you can have it swapped in a day and be on your way.
