i have that deal. im on third tranny, second one from them in 5 mos! the warranty did renew itself so thats a good thing. the '93 ATXs are just POS. can't complain on the warranty, its just an inconvenience not having a car for a week or so. they DO NOT install/recommend the shift kit or the warranty voids. look at it this way, the tranny blows, the warrannty renews. like a lifetime tranny.... eek!

they quoted me around $5000 for a tranny, if it blew in 5 months it cant be that good. for that much money you shouldnt be having problems. just my 2 cents. i would rather buy one from doug lewis and have it shipped up here from georgia.

I still think bang-for-the-buck, getting the reman tranny straight from Ford is still one of the better deals out there... ~$1700 list + 5.8 to 6.2 hours of labor (according to the SLTS (Service Labor Time Standards) which is how Ford calculates how much they charge you for labor).

So, even if your dealer charges $100/hour labor, that's still a Ford remanned tranny soup-to-nuts for ~$2300 (which is about what FPS charges for one of their rebuilts, plus shipping, plus core, plus install labor). Of course if you're friendly with your Ford dealer, you could probably get a break both on the tranny and labor prices, and come in closer to $2000.

With Ford's 12/12 warranty (although I thought I heard a rumor recently that Ford was now extending that to a longer term) valid at any Ford dealer in the country, I think it beats any savings you might realize going to a generic tranny shop, and certainly beats $5K+ eek! from Jasper (that actually seems high to me, I seem to remember around $2000 when I got a quote from them last year, although that was only with the std. warranty).

The only drawback is the lack of the TransGo kit (which the main benefit is the improved lubrication -- it's actually better to leave out the shift improver part of the kit and adjust shift feel via an LPM).

FWIW, some people have mentioned that FPS/Doug Lewis actually starts with a Ford rebuilt tranny, then adds the TransGo kit along with some other "voodoo magic" (As Kaotic refers to it). I'm not sure what, if any, warranty he offers. But, everyone who has bought one from him so far has had nothing but high praise.

Whatever you end up doing, the best warranty is one you never have to use! :)

(P.S. If you go to AAMCO, you are almost guaranteed that you'll have to make at least one, if not several warranty claims. Avoid them at all costs!!!)

Tranny rebuilds typically include all new friction materials (clutches, steels), seals, bushings, somtimes bands, etc. and 'hard parts' as necessary. 'As necessary' generally means broken parts or parts out-of-tolerance. The problem with some parts is although they may be technically in tolerance, they will still have a shorter life-expectancy. Some places will also install Ford's 'updates' which usually include redesigned parts (in the case of the forward clutch piston, updated from alum. to steel.). Most places will not (unless specifically asked and paid for) replace electronics, like the shift & TCC solenoids, EPC valve, TSS, VSS, TOT sensors, etc., and these can often lead to premature failure of a recently-rebuilt tranny.

My friendly Ford dealer just changed my tranny (95) under EXP. They said the bill would have been over $4K. But it is a Ford rebuild, and the new warranty is 3yr/36K miles. They also changed the rear main for grins, and the tie rod ends. All for $100 deductible.
