I know this sounds like a stupid question, but is it OK to put the jack under the rear center of the car where the control arms meet  ? I want to use jack stands at the front of the tension struts where I think the book recommends them but I am unsure if the center of the car is ok to jack from. Any advice?

Thanks,
Don

It's not great but you can do it. I would recommend a sturdy piece of 2x4 or 4x4 to spread the load and not distorting the rear box.

I do it all the time. Nothing wrong with it. It was up like that last night when Bryan King did my rear struts. You of course want to use jack stands BEFORE climbing under the car though.

Thanks guys.

I was thinking about using some wood to distribute the load. The manual doesn't say anything about jacking the rear of the car other than to jack at the front of the tension struts (not on the struts). Pretty hard to jack and then use jack stands in the same spot.

I am the original owner of this car (91 SHO, 71K miles) and the only thing I have done to the rear of the car is rotate the tires and bleed the brakes. It is about time I did a more thorough investigation of the rear end of this machine.

Just did the "96 brake upgrade after all these years. Stops much better. One thing I will say is do not use the rebuilt half shafts. I did thinking it would save me time in the future but I am having second thoughts. The quality of the remanufactured ones at Advance Auto is poor. Wish I would have used the Raxles ones instead. Other than that, the job went well.

Also, NAPA and Advance Auto claim to have the 96 SHO caliper bracket. Forget it, it does not fit. Only the dealer has the correct caliper bracket.

I should list the parts and prices I paid for info to others. If I have time I will. Have to do my taxes now  .

If you were around a while ago or searched the archives it was already gone over about the AZ calipers. Good job with the DIY stuff though.
