Is this Tire bad???

I have a set of 5 tires all the same kind. and of course the one that has the best tread left on it has this gash on it. the tear seems so close to where it will meet the rim in just weary on it. can anyone tell me if this tire is done because of that? or if it is repairable?

I tried to take pictures from different angles so you could get a real good idea on where it actually is.

No, dont mount that. Maybe for a spare to get to a-b if it holds air, but thats it.

is it repairable at all? seriously this thing has like 95% tread left. it just seems a shame to waste.

The tear doesnt scare me that much , the problem is the water will get inside the bead and rust will happen inside it which is really not a good thing.

I wouldn't ride a bicycle with a bead like that, let alone rip around in an SHO - which are prone to being beat on - with that tire.

If you have to ask, you shouldn't be driving a car.

Would you go on-stage with a guitar that's got a string thats ready to snap?

Well If you dont mind taking the risk and having a blow out that could have been prevented, then go ahead and run it. Just most people, myself included, like the peace of mind and are not willing to take the risk. If it blows in the city whatever but if its at highway speed or more... And I would be surprised if it holds air for an extended period of time.

yeah, I get the point now. Its the 5th tire in the set anyway so I'll just run the 4 others for now and save up for a brand new set of pirelli's or something

It's not that it won't hold air. It will.

The problem is that the steel belts are exposed to the atmosphere inside the tire. Rust WILL form on the belts and that rust will creep up the belts and compromise the safety of the tire. It may take a long time, though. I'd feel OK about using the tire on a temporary basis but you won't find a professional that would agree with me.

x2. Youd be surprised what tires can hold up to. You should have seen some of the tires i was running on my Jeep crawler.

I think its safe to say now that this tire should only be used in a short term application if at all.

Save your gas, Im telling you right now, its not repairable. The only defect in a tire thats repairable is on the tread, other than that its junk.

I didn't leave you bad feedback? and if I did it was a complete mistake. sorry

And I'm not going to mount it I have 4 other tires this is just the 5th.

If that tire was still mounted on the rim, you wouldn't even know about it. I wonder how many tires are out there with at least that much damage to the mounting area that was inflicted during the mounting process.
It hasn't been that many years since we were all driving 5000 pound cars around on 2 ply nylon tires, some with tubes and "boots" installed where the tire was really fubarred. And the main entertainment was "top ending" from town to town back then.

I think you could use it with a lot of caution. I think the forum members are right to think the main problem is the exposure of the "bead", so use some high tech rubber sealer to bury that bead again. Then mount it and leave it about a month to see if it looses any air. Then introduce it to the car when you know you will be doing light duty, like around town and close to home. If it passes all these hurdles, it is ready for legitimate highway speeds, but again with lots of caution.
I think it is possible to use it again, but it sure will be a lot of effort.
